This one is mainly for Dice or a10stress:

The placard in the nose wheel-well that has the "part number" also has a serial number kinda thing. Now I don't have one in front of me (obviously) but I think it goes something like: A10A-XXXX.

I know the last few digits of a VIN for a car is the car's sequence off the assembly line, but does this hold true to aircraft as well?
I can send you a pic tomorrow Dice if you need it.

Just kind of a "GEE-WIZ" thing.

Been a while since I have looked at one, But since it is 4 digits I would guess that is the tail number. The tail number consists of the last number of the year it was built and a 3 digit serial number. The serial # is in the order it was built. (I have worked planes 1 digit apart)
The last 2 digits of the year are written on the tail a bit smaller above the tail number to avoid confusion about the decade. For example: Aircraft 0223 was built in 1980 and will have a small 80 just above 0223 on the tail.

Have a great Air Force Day!

RavenECM:

I looked at another jet's today also. My jets tail is 80-278, this was 80-274. On the placard it reads

A-10A-0628 for 278 & A-10A-0624 for 274.

I guess I answered my own question on that one.

Dice I'll e-mail you the pic tomorrow from mine.

Weasel, email me at my work addy to contune this but, one thing to check is your aircraft's form 95 (in the jacket file in P&S)and it should track all three gear with install dates and swaps.

There is going to be a couple of TCTOs comming soon to verify struts (thick/thin) and remark them to match the aircraft and the 95.

Dice, you talking about when depot painted over something so we have to verify whether thin or thick? Think we got that one last week.

That and some have the part# of a thin wall when they are really thick so you will have to verify which you have, update the 95, and place a new placard on the strut.

Is that one out already?

Dice, You've got pics!! Not very good ones but it'll show you what I'm talking about. The only thing it has to do with the gear is that it's in the wheelwell near the variable ballast.

Roger I thought you were talking about the gear placard. I got your pictures and answered you on email.

Basicly this is a data plate showing the aircraft tail number and the production number.
