I was at the Bach (Sembach) and use to do halfways with you guys. If I remember right, we would meet at a rest area on Autoban 5. Its been a long time. I am in touch with MSGT Lemmon. Do you remember him?

I did many a half way run down good old A61 ! Did many a run all the way to the Bach just to get to a BX bigger than my bedroom !

Don't have a vivid memory of Lemmons. How about Lousenegger, Rabe or Butler ?

I was the Air Terminal guy. Miss the old Klong !

Refresh my memory, what squadron used Det 4 at Norvenich?
I'm sure the 92nd used Leipheim.

Well we had'em all but the 510th was there for a while then the Yellow tails were there. We lost one at Remscheid .. And I remember a time of the 511th right after the war. And then the WB guys came in for a while I think it was the 76th?? Red tails... It's all starting to fade. I'll have to pull out my pictures..... After Ahlhorn closed we were everybodies favorite !

That sounds like the 78th TFS Bushmasters out of Woodbridge on their last trip to the FOL before the Hog was withdrawn from the 81st TFW, they had red tails.
It was 957 that went down at Remscheid, tragic because it had been the wing's first loss for quite a time, then the 10th at Alconbury lost a couple and the Hogs USAFE good accident record for that time suddenly went out the window.

I Left the Bach before they closed, but I do have a pamphlet that has the entire history of the Det1. If any of you out there would like, I can scan it down and make a PDF out of it and Email it to fellow detachment personel. Just contact me via email.

The Bach had hosted many NATO TACEVAL's and we use to setup the barbaque areas down by HAS 5, just before going up the hill the the old reventments. Those were the days. The 78th (SSSSSNAKESSS) were our host SQ for Sembach.

I was at Det 4 for the closue, and it was please to have to go throught the wreckage of this aircraft piece by piece looking for unaccounted explosive charges. It was not fun--the smell as well as some of the things we found. The wreckage was crated up and put on flatbeds and haulded to Spang. AB.
I loved this place. Was not there long enough, and I sure don't miss the long hours of hanging out in the shelters.
I was a Jet Mech, and they kept me plenty busy in those days.

JMan,

I'm trying to put a face with your name. I was in the HAS with ya'll sorting through the parts and you're right. It was no fun. I still remember driving it to DRMO (I was one of the drivers !)and watching them push it off the bed of the truck. I left at closure also. Did the same thing, except no boxes, with the ABDR F-4.

Norvenich was my best assignment. I miss the people and the job. What I REALLY miss is working with you fighter guys. Being back in AMC made me decide to retire. One week to go.

I was working the MOC at DET 1 the day of the crash. I remember hearing the recall of the six jets that we had up at the time, and I had to inform the FL that the jets were RTB. At the time I did not know why there was a recall, but then I over heard the CO and XO talking on the HF Radio that we had in the MOC and then it was all clear. A few days later I was back in the states and found the article in a NY Newspaper and I have it to this day. I will never the picture that the Stars and Stripes printed the day after the crash. You may know the one. I will not describe it. Very poor taste on USAFE's part.

I was there when 957 went down during a NATO TAC Eval. And yes the 92nd did use Norvenich. We did OREs there and the Tac eval I mentioned earlier. I was in 92nd from 89 to 91 on aircraft 79-0218.
Its in the boneyard now....

I'll never forget either. We had no idea what had happened, all of a sudden the jets landed..except one. There were 3 of us that spoke German that all had to go up there to translate, etc. I'll never forget the experience.

I remember the recall too. We all thought it was simply because of weather. Our OIC then informed us all as to what had happened. Of course he said it was A/C 159 and it just so happened to be sitting on the spot where we were all standing. I was pretty good friends with the assistant on 957. I also remember the picture in the paper. It was unbelievable that they printed that. It was quite a shock.
