Hey does anybody out there KNOW (vs. speculation) why they chrome plated the muzzle on that A-10's gun I've seen pictures of? Was it for the demonstration team or something?? I can't imagine they would spend the $ for that considering after the 1st burst the chrome would discolor via the heat or smoke. Not to mention the new definition it would give to muzzle flash. Just wondering...?

Correct, only demo teams have chromed gun barrel tips. If you look around the aircraft, there are also other chrome parts on it, such as the sabre drain and other smaller pieces. The chromed guns are never loaded and are most definitely never fired. For show only.

If absolutely necessary, the aircraft can be used in combat as is. The gun is not fired as is in peacetime to preserve the looks for static display during demo team trips.

The chrome muzzles are also used for static display aircraft at bases with no demo team. We have one that we put on our jets for static, and so far as I know, swapping muzzles is relatively quick.

Belive it or not, the AF would not pay to get them chromed. We had to pay out of our own pockets to get them done downtown.

We had to bring our demo bird back to a regular flyer for last years deployment to Afghanistan. Wasn't too bad, muzzle swap takes only 10 minutes. Most of that is safety wire time. Takes much longer to put the original pylons back on. For demo 2,10,5,6,7 are removed. Paint job takes a real beating during flying and shooting. Have to admit a demo plane doesn't look right with out smoke trails. My favorite commander refused to let us clean his plane in Kuwait until its sceduled wash came due. His feeling was a clean plane was best used as an airliner. Shooters are dirty creatures, just means the gun is working good. Nothing like catching a plane at EOR and smelling the gun smoke on it.

Without weapons its just another airliner

NO WAY, ALWAYS TRIED AND KEPT MY HOG CLEAN!!!! ASK SOME OF THESE OLD RED TAILS, I KEPT MY HOG'S TEETH CLEANED AND WAXED AND EVEN DURING ODS,I WOULD FIND HER AT NIGHT AND CLEAN HER UP.
REMEMBER HOGS BY NATURE ARE A VERY CLEAN ANIMAL,IF GIVEN A CLEAN AREA OR DIRTY THE HOG WILL CHOOSE THE CLEAN.
THEY ONLY WALORE IN MUD WHEN THEY NEED TO COOL DOWN. HOGS DONT HAVE SWEAT GLANDS
SO A CLEAN "HOG IS A MO-FO CODE-1 ,TANK KILLING MACHINE IN MY BOOK,AND 12 YRS LATER STILL IS!

Nope, a dirty Hog is a killing machine! If I could post a picture, I would post my jet when it was very dirty.

I have to agree with Goose and Coach, in Goose's day there were more bodies on the flightline and a clean jet was a sign of pride in your aircraft, today with the shortage of people and the Ops tempo a dirty jet (may) mean it's flying its butt off!

I've seen them come through here that look like they just came off the wash rack, and some that look like the Crew Chief didn't really give a crap about the aircraft.

My point? You can't judge a jet by how it looks without knowing a little of its background.

Remember the chromed guns as far back as '83. Bentwaters had chromed the guns for their Gunsmoke team (They won the A-10 division). Big party in o-club that night when they arrived (from what I can remember). Was TDY flying Fol ops.

I GUESS I WOULD BE IN BIG TROUBLE THESE DAYS.
THANKS DICE..

IT USE TO BE THE NORMAN IF YOU HAD TIME TO LEAN ON IT CLEAN IT! AND THE PILOT OF YOUR PLANE WOULD ALWAYS EGG THE OTHERS ON WHO HAD A BETTER LOOKING JET.
BUT IF IT WAS REAL BUSY,I WOULD STAY PAST QUITING TIME TO CLEAN OR WEEKENDS. LOVED THE FLT LINE WHEN IT WAS EMPTY AND QUITE JUST ROW OF HOGS AND STILLNESS.
THE OTHER WAS YOUR PLANE WENT X-CROSS COUNTRY OR TO ANOTHER BASE FOR UTA SUPPORT AND THEY WOULD SEND BACK COMMENTS ON HOW GOOD SHE LOOKED,AND A PLEASURE TO WORK ON IT. THE GUARD/RESERVES WOULD ALWAYS SEND HER BACK CLEAN TOO.
SO TO EACH HIS OWN.

GOOSE I COULDNT AGREE WITH YOU MORE. WHEN I CREW OV-10S I WAS TOLD THE PROPER WAY TO INSPECT A PLANE WAS TO CLEAN IT AS YOU GO. THE SAME ON F-4S AND I PASSED THIS ON WHEN I CREWED U-2S. BUT ALSO I KNOW IT GOT HARDER AND HARDER TO DO AS TIME WHEN BY. WHEN YOUR THE ONLY 7 LEVEL ON THE LINE GETTIG ALL THE RED XS AND RUNNING A FEW JETS EACH NIGHT THOSE LITTLE NICE THINGS JUST GET PUT ON THE BACK BURNER. BY THE TIME I UASLLY LEFT THE LINE EACH NIGHT I WAS ON THE AVERAGE PULLING 12 TO 14 HRS THEN I STILL HAD TO DO THE PAPER WORK

What about gold plated barrels on an A-10? Like Uday's AK-47. But with better taste.

I WAS LUCKY THAT WAY,THERE WAS ALWAYS AT LEAST ONE MORE 7-LEVEL APG/RIVET AROUND.
BUT THEN IF SHE WAS CLEAN,IT WAS ALOT EASIER TO GO A FEW DAYS THEN CATCH UP INSTEAD OF SCRUBBING IT!!!

ANYTIME WE DEPLOYED TOO WE WERE EXPECTED TO CLEAN UP OUR JETS.

KOOBSTER THE 1ST PLANES I CREWED BEING T-39'S I LEARNED ALL ABOUT WAX AND NEVER DULLING LEADING EDGE SLATS. WOULD TAKE THE NEVER DULL PASTE WAX,THEN SPRIKLE FLOUR ON IT AND START BUFFING!!!!!!!!! WITH YOUR HAND!
THE OLD DOG'S THAT TAUGHT ME WERE EX-F-100 OR F-86 CREWCHIEFS. THEY HAD JUST THE "BARE METAL" SKINS ON THEM AND WOULD BUFF THEM OUT SO THAT THEY SHINED.
"YOU THINK THIS IS TOUGH?" THEY WOULD SAY "WELL BACK WHEN I WAS A YOUNG PUP I HAD TO HAND POLISH MY WHOLE SABRE " MAN I SOUND JUST LIKE THEM!!
SHOOT ME!!!!!!
SO I LEARNED FROM THE OLD SCHOOL AND EX-NAM DOG'S.
WOULDNT TRADE IT AND I HOPE I PASSED IT ALONG TOO
