Seen a lot of questions about the targeting pods on the A-10 in Iraq. Well the guys that brought them into the fleet was the guys from Mass Air Guard at the 104th FW. They basically got them dropped on their doorstep and were told to write the book on them. Six months later WE (and I do emphasize WE) the 104th took the pod to an undisclosed location forward and flew the shite out of them. Dont let anyone tell ya lies because there was only two units in this one that had the pod and not a one of them was an AFRES or active unit. The 104th from Mass and the 103rd from Connecticut made a rainbow unit of 18 jets and flew 896 sorties in two months without so much as a frikkin bullet hole in one of our birds. So ALL of the footage of A-10s with LGB's is ours. KC got to there base AFTER the fighting was done and they werent close to being spun up to use the pod. Hate to throw stones but when it comes to the 104th I am pathalogically loyal and I gotta call a spade a spade. The 104th and 103rd flew twice as many sorties as any other A10 unit with less aircraft and in the same amount of time. Here are the numbers gentlemen read 'em and weep all you non Mass or Connecticut guys;
Pope 12 jets, 472 sorties 1584 hours
Battle Creek, Boise, Penn 30 jets 931 sorties 2544.2 hours
Mass and Connecticut 18 jets, 882 sorties 3146 hours and 179 Sothern Watch sorties before the fight for another 300 hours. Oh yeah we scrambled 35 CSAR sorties for another 95 hours.

Just wanted to let you know for courtesy sake that SGT Goose's old jet (currently my jet) 80-166 added to its list of sorties in the desert from the first Gulf War. Goose you can fill them in on the details of that one. Well gentlemen that is as they say just about all my waffles for today. Questions can be submitted in triplicate to the front office....................

LOL Man Goose you are going to hit me every way you can! Ok, OK, I give I will make sure 166 doesn't get 666's wing! (close numbers there)

Welcome to the boards Hawg166, you guys/gals (all of you) did one heck of a job and made me proud to work on the A-10, looking forward to chating with ya! <S>

I'm sure when you were talking about me on the phone (interesting) Goose told you I love all A-10 units, Active, Guard, and Reserves- past and present. Strut if you must (like you deserve) but remember we are all tied together by that ugly thing we call the Warthog!

BTW Goose wasn't 166 assigned to the 23rd FW LA when you worked them? Now I'm not very good with A-10 history but that puts 166's roots at Pope AFB NC..right?

All right all right I admit sometimes I may be over bias...............but its just a little. Anyhoo did anyone cjeck by chance the numbers in the Air force Times last week about total tactical hours flown ? Looks to me like when all the numbers pan out the A-10 is going to have flown at least 65 % of all fighter hours. Also in the NY Times on May 27 a guy named Robert Coram wrote a a blistering article chastising the Air force for attempting to decom all A-10 units by 2004. The ariticle is called 'The Hog That Saves the Grunts'. More than worth downloading and reading because the guy is actually right on target. I am hoping that the voice of the spec ops guys that had their bacon saved in this one will carry a lot of weight at the Pentagon and get our precious Hawg a new lease on life.

Welcome home. Now, go stick a pin in your head and deflate it.

Never thought I'd see the day when Hog people would boast among other Hog people. $#!t, we're ALL the red-headed, retarded, bastard step-children of the Air Force!

You guys did good work over there. If you want to beat your own drum so hard, though, maybe you should go work with F-15C guys.

Arnie, I am new to the forum and I have allready been verbally spanked (accepted humbly I might add) by the others for being a bit to pro 104th. Realizing that I am new to the forum I say this to you must humbly..........................you would make a great NCO Academy instructor because you have the ability to throw out a bunch of superflous B.S. with a little miltary slant.
Crawling back into my hole...................Billy

Well, I can't argue with ya on that. I will, however, point out that it is hard to get bullet holes in your jet when you spend most of the war flying over the unoccupied desert, way west of the real fight, hunting for SCUDs. An important role, to be sure, but lets also call a spade a spade. We (the non mass or conn guys) flew ALL of our sorties over the action, getting shot at and helping the troops on the ground. If you're gonna throw spears, dude, try thowin' 'em at the guys who didn't go to the war. Those of us who went and got shot at don't need to hear it. Now go trade your 'Hogs in for Eagles so the size of your cranium's will fit with the jet you have and let the rest of us in the real 'Hog community do the grunt work. Take Care.

Hey, cut a guy some slack. We all have our high points to brag about, give him his moment. Even if the 103rd/104th didn't fly over the fight, they still played their role in OIF and did so with flying colors, thanks to both ops and maintenance.
