I was talking to some friends over the weekend and we brought up the avenger as a subject. We then dicided that maybe the a-10 would be good at ship hunting.

I wonder... I wonder.

yeah it'd be great at ship hunting, right up until it got within range of the defensive missle systems (anywhere from 10 to 40 miles depending on the ship class). A ship is the WORST target to go after without standoff range weapons, they are heavily defended by thier own massive protection systems, not to mention the other ships in the fleet that are there ONLY to provide defense for the fleet. I'd go against ANY target before I'd go against a modern warship.

I like the way Clancy describes the Hog run against the ships in Hunt for Red October. That was sweet!!!

Was that Hunt for Red October, or Red Storm Rising? I think it was the latter, but it's been a while since I read either of them.

The description was cool, right up to the point where the 'Hog driver turned on his 'targeting radar'!

That was Red October, but it wasn't in the movie, only the book.

There are a lot of small combatants that the Hog could smoke real good, cause they have very limited defenses, but anything with a SAM system that can outrange a Mav is probably a very, very bad idea...

Yeah, but how effective are these naval SAM systems? wouldn't most targets under a certain speed be removed automatically from the screen? The Hawg is the only bird which can pack the punch and still fly in at a very slow speed. It might just work...

The Maverick is the AGM-65. There is an anti-shipping missile manufactures by Israel by the name of the Popeye which the USAF uses. I think the missile your thinking of though is the AGM-84A Harpoon, which also has a land-attack version, the AGM-84E SLAM (Standoff Land Attack Missile). There are also plans for a longer range SLAM, the SLAM-ER (Extended Range)

Yeah you are correct, the G-2 model of the Mav is the anti-shipping version. Our C-Sar jets flew with the G-2 model. It has a larger and harder warhead than the standard Mav.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

300lb blast frag instead of the standard 165lb HEAT.

Unfortunately by naval standards Mav has VERY short range, is not a sea skimmer, and is subsonic. Hardly ideal.

BTW, Popeye/Have Nap is not employed in the anti-shipping role either.

We use Harpoon, SLAM, SLAMER, and SLAMER+ for that role.

AMRAAM is probably a nasty little bastard for ASuW too.

I wonder if Phoenix has an anti-surface mode like AMRAAM/Sparrow do?

AMRAAM as an ASW weapon? Doesn't AMRAAM only have a 60lb warhead?

Sure, but how much HE you think it takes to blow the radar dishes and antennae off a warship?

Not much, and that is called a 'mission kill'.

Besides, US fighters carry more than one, and hunt in packs. :)

Ask yourself what 8 AMRAAMs would do, hehehehe.

BTW, i think the warhead is actually more like 35lbs, not too sure though.

I'd rather just fling a couple of JSOWs at it, who knows maybee the ships movement will cancell out the wind drift prob!

Hang on a sec guys...
I understand the defensive weapons of a ship...but
Radar guided weapons work on a set speed of engagement and flack requires the speed of the enemy to be programed into the shells so they explode at the right time....
Also the a-10 has an extensive countermeasures suit. 160 flare and 160 chaff aint it?
So if you were to fly head on to a ship to present a small target and to prevent the ship from using phalanx etc. Travelling at a slow speed close to the water, line astern formation. (have any of you heard of the swordfish attacking the bismark in ww2?... if you haven't... the swordfish is an extremely slow aircraft that britain used in ww2... they flew in close to the bismark and droped torpedoes.. no planes were lost becuase there speed was so slow that the flack was mistimed.) ... At a range in which the A-10 would be most vonrable... the a-10 would look like fast clouds ... Also arn't we forgeting that radar in 2 dimensional... you can't tell hight acurately.. so high altitude clouds would move that fast. The job would be even easier if harms could be fited to the a-10 (to kill radar) or another aircraft fires them.
As far as i can see the most dangerous part would be trying to make a safe getaway.
It would, however, be very hard to attack a convoy as the defensive position of ships would make it easy for them to get a phalanx or two on to a plane.
Also whats the difference between a armed defenceve target in the middle of the desert and a ship? not much really and the a-10 has the firepower, ANYDAY to turn the bridge of a ship into a piece of twisted metal and the magazine into a fireworks display...

Think about it...

Hi-Speed stand off weps are the best way to pop ships. Harpoons rock at that. Exocets are overated, and our ships with their steel superstructure can repel a exocet with minimal damage. The Stark had a nice hole punched into her side, but she never sunk.

How about you become a Hog driver and see what you think about your ideas then?

I think your opinion would quickly change.

I'll leave the ship killing to the Navy.

Forget all that Ivan, and consider that the enemy vessel is going to begin engaging the hog at a range anywhere from a max of 100 miles(SA-N-6) all the way in to point blank range.

There is a reason nations have spent billions designing dedicated antiship missiles.

Besides, if we want ships sunk the best way to do is to use all of our submarines.

How about B-52's launching waves of Harpoons and HARM's hiding behind massive clouds of jamming, with a couple F-14's hidden in the jamming for air defense? I think that would work with a minimum amount of casualties. Only problem is, you would scare the fishies away...
