Anyone know if any of the Hogs have had any nose art applied for OIF? I know there are mission markings but not seen any nose art - anyone care to clarify? I know the F-15E fraternity have had both nose art and mission makings applied. Thanks Kevin |

There was no actual nose art applied during OIF for hogs at the Jab and I haven't heard of any being applied to the hogs at the other operating location. There were a few with mission marking, but they were few and far between. Pope retained their shark's teeth on the nose, but that's about it. |

Oooo very interesting, was there a particular reason for not applying any do you know? Did you happen to see/note the ones with mission markings? Thanks again Kevin |

From what I've heard, it's against regulations to apply nose art to the aircraft. I was told that Pope has an exception to this rule. Don't know for sure, though. |

I know that our jets from the 131st EFS have both mission marking and bombs painted on the side. We (the 104th FW) started painting them on the aircraft after Deny Flight in I think it was '95. So we have jets with mission symbols and bombs from Deny Flight, Nobil Anvil, and OIF. I would like my jet to get its Desert Storm mission symbols on it but SGT GOOSE CANT SEEM TO FIND TIME TO DIG ME UP THE NUMBERS ! I dont know if any other units put the symbols on their jets but I am sure that someone must. By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson |

Mission markings are allowed to be stenciled on the side of aircraft, just like stenciling a presidential unit citation on the side of the aircraft. I was thinking of actual nose art, not just stenciling. Currently the only nose art allowed on the Hog is the sharks teeth of the 23rd (74/75FS), to the best of my knowledge. |

Thanks Hog man its 80-166 and as Goose said he has kills, I just need total missions. As for ops symbols, the airplane was still at Barksdale during Deny Flight so I have no idea what it did at that timeframe. During Nobil Anvil I was in phase (@#%$&^!*& ) And almost all of my missions were CSAR during OIF because even though I had over 300 hundred left till phase I had to watch the hours because SOME MEAN MAN AT HILL WOULDNT WAVE MY WING STATION 23 INSPECTION But hey I got some licks in. Enough to send Santa Goose an expended shell and a GBU12 fuzing ring for Christamas in June By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson |

Hogman, Can you check out my jets DS tally (if any). Its 80-278. Think it would be interesting to give it all the stencils on the door for DS and OEF. "Coming to an UNDISCLOSED location near YOU..." |

Thanks Kevin

Some A-10s did have nose art but not like you are thinking of...MA and CT (that I know of) carried the 9/11 "Lets roll" nose art into battle and this is the first time a standerized nose art has been used that I know of. The main reason(s) for the aircraft not getting art in OIF was one, the 9/11 artwork, and two, OIF had no large build-up period like DS (6 months) and it was relitively short with no long periods of bordom when most art is applyed. I know some will disagree but most of the slack time came during the build-up and at the end of the conflect when your mind was either on the pending war or, at the end when home was on everyones mind. TG, you are right ACC regs only allow nose art on bomber aircarft and not figher/attack. Now I know the Guard,Reserves, PACAF, and USAFE do not fall under this reg (that's why you guys can have door art) but, you may have something along the same lines...I'm not sure. TG, you are also right about Pope being allowed to have the Sharks Teeth but they have a waiver from HQ/ACC because of their link to the Flying Tigers of WWII fame. This is also why they have the FT (Flying Tigers) tail code instead of the standard of two letters of the base they are assigned, which for Pope should be PE, PO, PP or something like that. You also have the Warthog face on the A-10s at Barksdale but I'm not sure if they require a waiver for that or not. There is also the Black Panther on the engines of SP which is a form of nose art, again if they have a waiver or not (or if they need one) I'm not sure. Hawg166, I will not go into why we would not approve a waiver for your jet but I will say it was the right thing to do. Ugly but well hung! http://www.warthogpen.com |

Dice, Thanks for the info. For the 9-11 artwok, every unit is authorized one aircraft with the "Let's Roll" art on the nose of it. It's invariably the wing commander's plane, and to the best of my knowledge, every hog unit has completed it. Battle Creek and Pope also had planes over there with that art work. |

I guess the 9/11 may be looked at as the offical nose art of OIF...like it or not. Ghost, do you know of any photos of this chalk art? I know a couple of the Cajun jets got something like that in OEF but haven't see it from OIF. Ugly but well hung! http://www.warthogpen.com |
