Thanks in advance.

Same for the guys from the 131st EFS except we had 2 x GBU12, 2 x MK82, Litening II pod , and LAU88 with three Mavs.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

LAU-88 Launchers hold 3 Mavericks. They fire one at a time but allow rapid fire of the missile and allow the pilot to boresite all of the missiles to the same spot without having to boresite all three missiles. A computer chip in the launcher itself remembers the boresite and applies it to the missiles. The launcher also prevents quick pickles by holding the fire cue until the missiles leaves the rail. Normally only 2 missiles would be loaded on them, but it's designed to hold three A, B, or D missiles.

Rx are rockets. We would normally carry 7x WP rockets and 7x HE rockets. At night, the HE rockets would be replaced with a pod of illumination flares of some kind (LUU-1, LUU-2 or LUU-19)

LUU-19 = The LUU-19 is the IR-spectrum variant of the LUU-2 paraflare currently deployed by F-14’s from ITER’s. The LUU-19 has the same physical dimensions as LUU-2, and provides IR illumination of the target area for NVG-capable attack aircraft. The LUU-19 flare is the latest in a series of infrared flares introduced by Thiokol for covert target illumination and rescue missions. Designated as a multi service flare by United States military forces, the LUU-19 incorporates improvements and modifications that further enhance its performance and reliability.

The LUU-19 flare is compatible with all standard flare launching systems used on helicopter, cargo, and fighter aircraft. It can be deployed from LAU-74 cargo aircraft launchers, aircraft wing-mounted racks, and the SUU-25, 42, and 44 series launchers. It can also be hand launched from aircraft. A key feature of the LUU-19 is the wavelength of illumination. The LUU-19 has been developed to illuminate in the near infrared region of the spectrum. This enhances dramatically the capability of the military's night vision devices used for covert night operations while eliminating the bright illumination that radiates from other flares.

That sounds like it's straight out of some Air Force announcement. The A-10 launches them from the SUU-25 pod. The LAU-88 fires one missile at a time and can fire them as quickly as the pilot can slew the next missile, lock-on and fire. Mode would be singles.

Wow… An infrared (predominantly) flare.

What a good idea, light up the bad guys without them knowing you're doing it.
That rocks…

It's always made me laugh how in the Splinter Cell video game the lead character has night vision goggles that glow green, from the front…

That's going to work isn't it?

"Let's turn out all the lights to give myself the dark advantage." Thinks the hero

"Let's all shoot at that strange green glow that's appeared in the corner!" Shout all the guards

Woosh… What was that? That was 44 going off topic…

Couple of questions for you, what was wrong during the period of Desert Storm that stopped the Hogs from having 3 Mavs on the Lau?
Remember reading something about it years back. Anyone?

Also anyone got apic of a Lightening 2 pod hung on a Hog?

Cheers
Kevin

the problem with the triple launchers is that they create a lot of drag. pics of the Litening pod? here ya go , from elsewhere on this forum.

My understanding when it comes to the LAU88 is that the inboard MAV can burn the paint on the wheel pod when it lights off the rail. Our pilots opted to carry the three Mavs regardless of this and we didnt have any problems at all with the birds that fired all three.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

IF YOU FIRED THE INBOARD MAV,IT WOULD FRY THE WHEEL POD AND LEAVE FRAG HOLES IN THE FLAPS.
THAT WAS THE ANSWER I WAS TOLD,AND NEVER SAW 3 MAV'S LOADED ON A LAU-88 FOR REAL UNTIL NOW.
PLUS LIKE BOOMER SAID WITH THE LOADS THEY CARRIED I ODS,THE DRAG WAS A PROBLEM.
BUT EVEN WITHOUT LOADING THE INBOARD STATION,WE DID SUFFER SOME MAV DAMAGE. 166 HAD 4 NICE HOLES IN ITS FLAP AND THE OUTBOARD WHEEL POD DINGED UP BY A AGM-65D OR WHICH EVER THE BIGGER PAYLOAD MAVS WERE THEN.

From what I understand, the biggest problems with the LAU-88A is that some of the chips installed in the LAU that held the boresite/fire signal/did other things were defective which caused a high no-fire rate in the Mavericks. Many of the racks have been modified to LAU-88A/A (I think) and have new non-defective chips put in them. One of the limitations were had in OIF (at Jaber) is the limited amount of load crews we had to install the racks and Mavericks on them. Another limitation is that you can't carry multiple G/G2 models on them due to weight limitations, and we liked to carry the G models.

Three years and I finally got 200 posts!

Hey Boomer thats a real nice pic of a Hog with Litening 2 pod - was that from Kuwait?

Interesting about the LAU-88 and the burning of the pod when 3 Mavericks are carried! Am guessing that still happens now when 3 are carried? So why has the attitude changed with regards to this being more acceptable now than previously?

Cheers and this forum rocks!

Hogman,

I don't really think it's an attitude change as much as it is necessity. The Litening Pod can only be hung on a Maverick station due to wiring limitations. That means if we carried a LAU-117, we could only carry one Maverick on the other Mav station. Since the Mav is our best standoff weapons and currently the only PGM we carry everyday, we like to have as many as possible.
