Looking through the photo gallery I've noticed that some of the Hogs pictured have the Pilots, CC (Crew Chief?) and ACC (Assistant Crew Chief?) names stencilled under the canopy.

Silly question, but does that mean the plane is assigned to that individual pilot and serviced by the same guys?

I've always kind of assumed they were a bit like pool cars. You wandered up to any one that had the keys hanging out of the ignition and cranked it up.

Can somebody clear this up for me..?

I have never been an active duty Air Force Crew Chief so I cant comment on the bgger units. In my unit we have a dedicated crew chief for each airplane with the exception of two jets. Those jets that dont have full time technicians as primary crew chiefs are our orphans. The assistant crew chiefs are usually our traditional guardsmen again with a couple of exceptions. Our flight chiefs try to keep the crew chiefs on their own airplanes including during phase but sometimes we have to work on other guys jets. I mean there are times when more than one mechanic is needed for a job. As far as pilots go they are like pool airplanes with any pilot flying any airplane thats available.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Most pilots have their name on the side of a jet. However that does not mean it's their jet. Any of the pilots can and will be assigned to fly it on any given day. A crew chief will normally crew his own bird, though, unless he's unavailable.

Actually you've got it a little turned around.
There's a pool of pilots that the Hawgs let fly.

ok the plane belong to the dcc the pilots just borrow them to go and fly around for a few hours. the crew chief works the jet everyday up to 12 hrs a day.

Goose,

Speaking of 781s, how come none of the 781s I ever check have the plane on a black-line initial? If nothing else, they're still on a red slash for something seemingly insignificant. Last plane I ever saw on a black line was a T-37. But then again, there may be something different with the contract-maintainers on those jets, hehehe.

I SLIPPED 0166 BY ON A BLACK LETTER INTIAL ONE FLIGHT,I GOT MY K CLEANED OUT AND MY NEW STRUTS DONE.
QA DIDNT HAVE TIME TO HIT IT,WELL THEY ALL WENT TO LUNCH,SLIPPED IT BY MOC AND FLEW THE SORTIE.
I PUT IT BACK ON A RED / AS SOON AS IT CAME BACK FOR MAP CASE BROKEN.
THEN ALL THE NEW TCTO'S COME IN THAT NEED PARTS,WELL FILL THE K BACK UP AND THEY HIT MY PRE FLIGHT GOT A ZERO DEFFECT.

BUT I WAS USE TO TAKING 1 PLANE ALL THE TIME. MAC/AFCC THAT WAS MY BIRD AND WHEN THAT ET-39 FLEW I WAS THERE NO MATTER WHAT DAY,GOT TO GO WITH SOME TIMES,BUT I PRETTY WELL HAD IT MADE.
THEN TAC I TRIED TO KEEP IT UP,ALOT HARDER BUT ALWAYS LOOKED AT HOW YOUR JET WAS AS A REFLECTION OF YOURSELF,IT WOULD GO X-CROSS COUNTRY ALL THE TIME AND TIGER2 FOR AWHILE.

THERE'S THAT FEELING WHEN YOU SEE YOUR NAME ON THE PLANE,AND IT FEELS GREAT!!!!!

Leads to one other question.

If pilots share jets (or as DB says the Hogs choose the pilot they want sitting in them) what are the rules about clearing out all the road trip shit that tends to build up?

What happens to all the old coke cans, McDonalds wrappers and cuddly toys left behind by the last pilot?

Oops sorry, got confused between pilots flying planes and the Misses borrowing my car <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>...

You don't know just how true the comment on road trip shit is! Does anyone else know the story of the pilot who had a problem when nature called, and he decided to try and improvise with the piddle pack?

Well, my brother is an A-10 pilot. Seems that one of his fellow pilots had to do a little more than pee while on a long flight. After determining he could not hold it, he managed to get his flight suit around his ankles, and began conducting his business into his piddle pack. He didn't realize that he could not do one without the other, and managed to pee all over his cockpit. I only hope that he had the decency to clean up his mess himself when he landed. And if you've seen the size of those cockpits, how in the world did he get his flight suit off? I think they should add Imodiom to their pre-flight. I'll bet this guy always does!

This story came up while visiting a static A-10 display at the Dayton air show this weekend. Seems as though the boys over in Battle Creek had heard it too. They probably thought it was just folklore or an exaggeration!

I know a guy who didint Safety the AcesII, had to do a number 2 and Egressed accidently when a buckle caught The Eject Handle.

In our squadron, it's $5 per item left in the jet, payable to the LPA. Depending on the item (used piddle pack, for example) it could be a higher fine, and the crew chief(s) may also be owed beer...or you may find yourself the victim of a good ol' CC Mafia-style beat-down with a rubber hose.

Don't poke fun at my small stuffed 'Lion King' Pumba good-luck charm, either!! (just kidding)

I remember one time we had a pilot get air sick and projectile puke in a jet. Sometime later...(week or so), I was running a jet on the trim pad.
While it was running at idle for it's 5 minute cool down, I was mindlessly scrapping some stuff off the RHAW indicator with my finger nail when I came to realize which jet I was in and what the "stuff" was I was scrapping off!!! YECK!!!

I'm curious as to what happened. I would assume it killed him in flight seeing as he would be unbuckled? I assume we could rest assured he shit himself?

There is a BIG difference in lap belts being undone and shoulder harneses being undone.

Yeah there is a big difference between lap belts and harnesses. I was an AME for 6 years and I more than understand bang seats, however Smitty is right. Assuming this guy was in the process of squating or bending over slightly when the inertia reals retracted and then the vernier rockets went off I think this guy must have had an Excedrin headache that he will never forget................and one great big dry cleaning bill.
