Or, in this case, a Forward Operating Base. Had breakfast today with some guys that had just rotated back from their FOB: "So what happened, Man?" "We was on a patrol and got pinned down by some &$#@ ragheads for about 20 minutes when the LT finally gets his head out of his helmet and calls in some CAS. About ten minutes later we get a call to pop smoke and next thing we know this Warthog comes barrelin' in an' dumps a couple of bombs and there's $hit flyin' everywhere! An then just to make sure, he come back aroun' and we hear this buzz-saw like sound and there's more $hit flyin' from that big-ass gun! I'm tellin' ya, that A-10 was the sweetest lookin' M***** F***** I ever saw!" Personally I think more generals need to havethis type of experience before they decide who stays and who goes from the inventory. Without Geospacial Intelligence You're Nowhere |

A beutiful sight is an A-10 poping IR flares overhead thru NVG's and seeing some apaches hunting around your airfield when taking some small arms fire. Gas well spent. Only disappointed we didn't get a live fire demo out of it. Without weapons its just another airliner |

If you ask me the only thing beautiful about taking small arms fire is when it stops. I always hated getting shot at. "Trample the wounded, hurdle the dead." |

It tends to piss me off. Overkill??? I'd kill a fly with a howitzer if I had one. |

In exemple : The agiity and the ability to fly very low. 2 things that the Spectre can't do. Kill the innocents ! Kill them now ! lol |

I dissagree, I think the AC-130 is about 5 times more maneuverable than the A-10, PLUS it has the ability to travel underground which the A-10 has never been good at. Boys, boys, boys! Remember, they're both dedicated killing machines, each superbly outfitted to do their mission. Between the two of them we get 24/7 CAS! Hajji, you can run, but why die tired? |

I had the opportunity to see a Spectre in night action during our little foray south of the border back in 89 from a few miles off. It's eerie, beautiful, terrifying, glorious, surreal, and awe(fear?) inspiring all at the same time. It seemed as if God himself had wrought his fury from the heavens every time the 20mm Vulcans fired those looooooooooong streams of continuous red tracer. The SEALs that were assaulting the presidential jet couldn't raise the AC-130 tasked to them, and had to make their assault unsupported, over the obviously flat and exposed terrain of an airfield. As a result, they were chewed up pretty badly. I wasn't but 5 miles away from their AO that first night. "If we are not victorious, let no man return alive." Gen George S. Patton |

They were tasked to take the bird in one piece and some Federal Agency would have the puppy to fly. One SEAL operator in the planning stage recommended that an Army Company do the Op. As the SEALs came onto the tarmac a Panamanian officer met them and told them this exercise wasn't authorized. Giving them a big hint to leave in one piece. They didn't and the Panamanians had some heavy MGs in place. Bad karma resulted. Taking a bird out is far easier than seizing it. Jack |

My replacement is due in today, so after a couple of days turnover, I'll be headed back to the U.S. Thanks to all for your support. After supporting the troops for the last 20+ years it was a very good and rewarding experience to do so from closer to the pointy end of the spear. Hajji, you can run, but why die tired? |
