The vulcan cannon is news to me. Anyone with pictures of it mounted on the aircraft? I have also heard it said that a gun pod can be mounted on the pylons. Can anyone give a yea or nea to that affect?

Can a Gun Pod be mounted???? Sure! Will there ever be? Unlikely.
I have an old -1 with a supplement S-84 dated December 89 that removed the SUU-23 Gun Pod from the load table.
Cheers

the GAU-13 (i think) is a shrunk down version of the GAU-8 in a pod (they did tests with the F-15E)

i have some info on it @ home, i'll grab my book 2nite and post when i find the data :)

the other use for the GAU-8 is the Goalkeeper Naval Defense gun :)

"the GAU-13 (i think) is a shrunk down version of the GAU-8 in a pod (they did tests with the F-15E)"

The GAU-13 is a 3bbl 30x173mm rotary cannon that fires at a max rate of 2,100rpm. No idea if it's actually 'based' on the GAU-8/A though.

It was the F-16(aka A-16), not the F-15 that the 30mm pod was designed for. IIRC Dice and M&M stated that there were severe cracking problems on the Viper's inlet as a result of the vibration and g forces induced by firing the weapon.

found the info i was after -

the GAU-13 was indeed designed for gun pod installation with just 4 barrels

they did testing with a 30mm pod on the F-15E over wisconsin in 1980.. i thought this might have been the same weapon..

Hmm, thought it was three....not the first time i've been wrong, lol.

I'm pretty certain that it was deployed with an ANG F-16 squadron though.

Found this bit of info on the AF museum web site......"The F-15E, which first flew on 11 December 1986, was used extensively in the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield/Storm with great success." It would be hard to have flown the gun pod in 1980 if the first beagle didnt fly until 86. Maybe you were thinking of another jet? I know the "boys from syracuse" flew the gun pod during the first few days of the gulf war. They stopped after having lots of broken rivets in the intake on their block 10 lawn darts.

the pod was on the belly of the F-15E Strike Eagle proto 71-291, first flown around 82(as the Strike Eagle, was a B model for a long time before that)(71-291 perhaps the best known "mule" ever lol ), and alternated with that large Pave Tac or Pave Strike pod.

But it was never operational or deployed on the F-15, any model.

It was only used as M&M confirmed by the one NY ANG Sqn, and only for a brief time.

Does anyone know if the GAU-13 pod system is still 'operational' in the USAF inventory?

true, but nobody said "designed for this", or "opperational for that". I was just narrowing down the time line.

The truth about the Gunpod in desert storm was that it was used on the first 5 cas missions. the problem with the gun is more accuaracy than anything, Once the gun was fired it went out of zero and did not maintain accuracy it would only throw out a supressive fire and was tactically useless for destroying the target. In the fireing of the gun the Centerline Mount was damaged and couldnt hold a zero.

They quickly went back to CBU's and Iron and started killing their targets. Direct Word of mouth from a freind that was in the Squadron during that time.

"The greatest pleasure is to vanquish your enemies, to chase them before you, to rob them of their wealth, to see their near and dear bathed in tears, to ride their horses and sleep on the white bellies of their wives and daughters."
