Has been updated, it's still a work in progress but it looks like it will have a lot of great info once it's finnished!

Pete, looks like they will have a "Hog suff" pages(s) where you can place items you may have for sale on the site...may be a good plase to post some of your items!

http://www.hawgsmoke2004.com/

Dice, Thanks for the ''headsup''on Hawgsmoke 2004. I am planning my vacation time already.I hope enough W/T folks can attend, especially the England AFB guys.It will be a pleasure to meet everyone. Ran into an old Moody A10 weapons guy a while back. Don Flowers, says he knew all the names I named off. He was from Moultrie, but now lives, and sells Harleys in Albany Ga.

Hi all,
Just signed in, for I'm a Hawg-addict too.
I'm mainly photographer and try to collect as many A-10's as possible. Therefor I'm coming over to witness the Hawgsmoke '04 event at fmr. England AFB.
One question I have is: does anyone know how photo opportunities are from outside the fence? Landing oke? high/low? taxiways?
I got up to 800mm lences so can do a lot.
I'm very curious , cuz I don't know if they'll let me on base! (I know at the open house on saturday I can, but I'd rather see the exercise.

Sharpshooter as always we are glad that there are Hawg fans that are coming not only to the WT, but to the Hawgsmoke competition. However we are very carefull here about opsec. So the best we can do here is to try and point you to a public affairs person that may be able to hook you up with a photo shoot opportunity since you will be travelling to see the competition. I dont know where to find that person that may be ablt to help you but I am sure that Dice may know what general direction that person can be found in. The second website posted by Dice should be of help.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Hi Hawg166,

Ok, I get it. Only thing is that the PAO will be very very busy those few days. I'll have to get in with the press than, cuz they'll have 4 days to cover the event.
My goal is the same so I'll try to work something out with the PA office.
Just was curious if some landing/taxishots are possible from different angles at the base.
Thanks for the replay

Peter

Was hoping to make Hawgsmoke this year. Even got asked if I wanted to be on the team. Don't think the wifey would be too happy with me if I left for a week 3 days after our first is born. Bad form. Oh well.

Maybe I'll make it next year.

Hmmm, it's tempting. A) Never been to Louisiana. B) Can I get a backstage pass?

Sharp I am sure that there will be a lot of folks taking off base shots so you will probably have good company. I just thought that because you were travelling you may want to try to get an up close and personel shot, I really didnt try to discourage you........sorry. Maybe if you are lucky and the A10 Gods are smilling on you, there will a photo op with Dice, the King Pillar of all Hawgdom.
Dice, I am hoping to be there. It would be nice to finally put a face to a name and maybe buy you a round.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Congratulations to you and the wifey on your pending arrival! Having two little chips off the old block myself I can only say that they put a whole new wonderful perspective on your life. They are truly little gifts from God!

Cheers! M2

I'm hoping to go myself. My wife is from that area, of course, so we get down there fairly regularly. I'll have to see about getting an extra day off. Otherwise, I won't make it down there until some time that Friday evening. At least, I'd make it to anything planned for that Saturday.

Decisions, Decisions!
I've been at previous Hawgsmokes, and always enjoyed myself, but this year another "must attend if possible" event coincides with Hawgsmoke.. The Ft Lauderdale Air and Sea show is on the same weekend!

Oh yes and the Air and Sea Show is supposed to be a retirement party for one of our jet jockies. That could be an interesting weekend.

OK, I'm new here so go easy on me. I've been reading these forums for a while now and thought it about time I signed up. I don't think any other aircraft type in the inventory has such a high standard of website as the A-10, with both this and the Hog Pen full of quality info and a sierra hotel forum to boot!

I'm a part time writer and photographer on military aviation from London, had articles published in AirForces Monthly, Flug Revue, the USAF yearbook and Combat Aircraft amongst others.

I've grown up with the A-10 here in England, had many visits to "Commie Corner" at Bentwaters and also witnessed the gun being fired up at the Holbeach range in the 80's, amazing sight/sound.

Planning to attend Hawgsmoke in Alex with the media crowd so I'm hoping I'll get to put a few faces to your user names, so here's a quick straw poll, who's planning on attending Hawgsmoke 04 from this forum?

Gunsmoke...welcome to the club and thanks for the kind words on behalf of Weasel. I'm planning on attending but not 100% sure yet. Sit back, draw a pint and enjoy the forum. BTW, I was stationed at the 81 TFW from 1991 to 1993. Sure do miss it over there.

Gunsmoke, I was at the 81 TFW from 82-84, and I caught a ride with a full bird in his staff car one day and when we rode past Commie Corner he MF'd the hell out of all the people there taking pictures and writing down tail numbers. Now I know the majority of them are innocent planespotters, but as we knew not everybody was so innocent. It was a common problem at Aviano during ALLIED FORCE.

Cheers! M2

Thanks Dice, Hogmender and M2. For those unfamilier with Commie Corner, it was an old church up near the eastern EOR that had a public right of way so people could easily park up and watch the A-10s in action at close quarters. I don't remember any instances of people causing any problems there, in fact everyone welcomed the presence of the USAF and acted as extra eyes and ears if there was any risk of unlawful entry. It was excellent for photography and that full bird might have been more mindful of whose country he was in!

I will always remember dashing up there to catch 23 Myrtle Beach jets passing through on their way home from DS in March 91, all that lovely nose art and mission marks made the trip worthwhile. I can't wait to see all those rows of ugly Hogs in Alex, thirteen years later and they're still the best tool for CAS and will be whatever they do with the F-35.

Cheers,
GS

Wow, this is a really nice joint you have going here Dice. Props for the time and effort used to have a place for hog fans to gather and indulge themselves in information.

This topic caught my attention since I am a Bossier City resident and Barksdale is hosting this event. I attend college at LSUS majoring in computer science and hope to join the Air Force after I graduate to become a pilot. Specifically an A-10 pilot but after flight training is when I'd be able to make an educated decision on the bird I fly or I may not even have a decision :)

Has anyone ever been to a Hawgsmoke before? If so what can I expect at the open house from 8 - 12 and is the open house worth the drive. While I'd like to witness the competition or at least see video of the competition, I have no connections for that sort of thing so I'm labeled "aviation enthusiast". Also at the open house, will pilots be there with their A-10s so I could ask some questions since I'm seriously contemplating joining the AF?
