Got a question for ya - I was thinking about stability the other day, and about how most fighters and aerobatic aircraft aren't. This is the price paid for maneuverability. But then I got thinking (as always) about the Hog. It's massively maneuverable, but also seems like a highly stable aircraft, both statically and dynamically. Any insight on how that works?

The big control surfaces are part of it but also the fact that SAS is also using those large control surfaces to keep it stable in the air.

The control surfaces are huge. The wings have a significant amount of dihedral and lots of camber. The airplane seeks stable flight unlike some other aircraft (namely the F-16 and F-117). The SAS helps but I think it's more to stabilize the platform for weapons delivery. The thrust (16000 lbs) is a lot but not much at all when you consider thrust-weight. .5 to 1 on a clean jet with almost no fuel. The slower speeds of the mighty Hawg allow for much smaller turn radiuses (is that a word?) than an F-16 at higher speeds. In addition, the F-16 has a much smaller wing requiring many more G's to achieve the same turn radius of the Hawg even at similar speeds. A Hawg with a 1500 ft turn radius might be pulling 4 G's while a Viper would be at 9. A nice advantage during BFM though...

LOL MrMudd. The first thing I thought after writing that reply was, "Man, I hope this is correct or else Mudd'll let me know."

Cheers...
