While doing research on the nose art below I have run into a slight problem. I contacted the PA at Willow Grove to get the background on this art and the story behind the title "Black Hogs". Well I got the histroy of the artwork but they have no documentation on the Black Hogs title, any of you guys (TinyGiant) know where this name came from?

Ill ask around tomorrow at work. They stopped using the name before I started working there. I believe because of the planes lost. The nose art has been since painted over. Im not sure if the title of that art was blackhog. I think it was just a Philly/A-10 themed painting. In Don Logans book it shows a painted nose gear door on the plane with Philadelphia Freedom painted on it. But the book does show black hogs in print on all the planes. Ill see what I can find out.

I know this part for fact Dice. The artwork was put on in the early 90's (I forget which year) for a LODEO. The unit wanted the aircraft to win the best looking category or whatever that equivalent is now. I dont know who the crew chief was or is. I simply remember it flying it into Barnes very shortly after the job was done and the crew chief explained the reason it was on there. I didnt even know it was still on there.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Had you tried Maj George Worrall, 103 FW/PA, at (860) 292-2506 / DSN 220-2506 (george.worrall@ctbrad.ang.af.mil)?

Cheers! M2

Thanks guys this is what I got on the nose art from the wing historian...

In response to your request to (name removed), we have some answers to your questions. Aircraft 659 was flown by Lt. Col. Louis Meier. The 111th Structural Repair shop designed it and Gary Campbell, Delaware Valley Historic Aircraft Association, painted it on the A-10 in 1996. The design shows a minuteman riding a Pegasus and Philadelphia is in the background. The nose art was made especially for the Annual Loadeo competition and the 111th folks wanted to win the Best Looking Aircraft competition, which they did!

Have attached a photo of 659 in flight, but doesn’t have the nose art now. (name removed) should have a photo of it and I’ve left a message for him to get back to me on that. Will forward that when I get it! The nose art was removed in 1997/98 by order of the new commander.

At the moment, I haven’t found anything concrete on the Black Hog reference, only rumors and ideas?

Ken972, the engines had "Black Hogs" painted on them and black stab tips. M2 I'm working with PA but not the same person you have in your post...I will check with him to see what he knowns. Good memory there Hawg166!

BTW- the aircraft has a mural of this paint scheme on the ladder door today...pretty cool!

Ive heard a few different versions of where black hogs came from. I suppose the same that you have heard. Apparently the black hog in the world of warthogs is the toughest and hardest to kill.

I know one of the Hog drivers up at Willowgrove. Nice guy...for a luitenant. ;)

I'll be up there for the airshow this summer. We'll have to meet up there if you're working that day.
