What isthis? what's the function? and what makes it fragile? the text fragile looks stupid on a Hog

What Yajimbo said. That and that the things are not integrated into the structure of the aircraft, just bolted on. This makes it a bit easier to damage it. You'd really have to go up and take a closer look than those photos to see what I mean.

Composite airfences. They simply direct airflow in High AOA and Bank angles (SLIP). Mostly to prevent a disrupted airflow situation to the Engines.

I thought those had more to do with airflow over weapons stations 5&7? The only A-10 without these were the two YA-10s, the 6 preproduction and all production aircraft had/have them.

I have to go woth dice on this one, the slats direct airflow to the eng, at high AOA, not the windfence. Goose is correct also, smack your head on em am you will not forget they are there.

The story I heard was the airflow over 5 & 7 would cause bombs on a MER or TER to "hang" for a fraction of a second throwing off the drop. By placing the windfences there they "split" the airflow down the middle of the bomb racks improving separation.

Fender are you there bud, we need some weapons inputs here!!!

Dice, I was told the same thing as you. It had to do with the weapon stations 5,6,& 7. All I know is when you are taking out the ammo drum the one on the left is easily damaged if you are not careful.

Mudd has the straight dope. This is my recollection. The fences are part of the fix put on to relieve engine airflow distortion. The major items in the fix are the wing slats and the "Mach alpha" sensor in the leading edge that decides when to throw them out. The third item is the stall strip on the outer wing leading edge that provides stall warning. The way it was told to me, wind tunnel smoke tests showed a vortex eminating from the wing/fuselage intersection that got swallowed by the engine at high alpha. The fences eliminated it. These three things were put on as a package and have not ever been tested individually. I thought the fences were made from thin aluminum skin with aluminum honeycomb, not composite, but it could have been changed. They are very light but prone to damage, especially right next to those store stations. I don't think anyone knows the effect the fences have on store separation. I don't think any separation tests were done (wind tunnel or flight test) without the fences.

The windence isn't too fragile to put a bump on your head when your not paying attention. But it doesn't stand a chance when hit with a chock by a SNCO who shall remain nameless to break it loose from all that sealant. It had been being removed to FOM, but was obviously R2'd after that. Lil Hitler knows what I'm talking about. (disclaimer before that old man kicks my ass: it wasnt him)

There's one thing i know from being around A-10s up close- there are a LOT of things that are in an excellent position to smash you on the melon!!!

Air2Mudd drove it into my head to be careful under the bird before we even got to the hangar, lol.

Jack I'm glad you Clarified that, I'd hate for you to have to call your mother and... ah you know the rest. (LOL)

I'm not sure of the extent of the damaged caused by that nameless SNCO but I do know he hit a several times before it came loose and ultimately had to be NRTS'd

I'm pretty sure they are still constructed of aluminum skin with honeycomb, or at least the last time I saw one that was damaged enough to see the inside it was.

I was a victim of the F-5 panel UHF antenna. Ouch, 5 stitches. The worst I remember seeing was Bobby Starr ran into an open speedbreak and layed his melon open good.
