I have a couple of questions on door art I photographiced during Hawgsmoke. I'm also trying to get the story behind the use of the "little Abner" cartoons on the side of your jets. I heard the story once before but can't remember the full story.
I have emailed the PA office at BD but thought I would post here and see if anyone can help.

Dice-

The use of the Lil' Abner cartoons started back when the unit was first created in 1940. On December 7, 1941, the 47th got two airplanes airborne during the attack on Pearl Harbor and the pilots shot down 8 Japanese aircraft.

All the unit's follow-on aircraft have had Lil' Abner characters painted on them, including the A-10s. There is a sign in the bar at Ops that dates back to WWII and reads, "Welcome to Dogpatch."

Sorry I don't have any more specific info than that, but I can get you in touch with those who know if you'd like more info.

TS, I took the pic below when I was at Barksdale in 2002 with a tiger team looking at their operation. This is when I was told the story of how they started used the images and it's pretty much how you said but, I want the specfics to go with my nose and tail art history files. If I need your help later I wil get back with you and thanks for the offer!

Email has been forwarded off to the Current Regime at Barksdale. A couple of the guys I spoke too on the phone said they have actually met you during the Hawgsmoke. They are positive they can get you whatever you require. I also gave them your Home and Cell Phone. If i recieve anything directly i will forward it off to you Hogpen13.
