Dudes, I get it, really I do. I was AD and know all about ops tempo. I'm one of the old school guys and used to just be about \"just fly it\" (as long as it was safe).
These worn out jets are coming to the Guard to replace the F-16s we used to have so a lot of our guys are stuck in the VERY anal F-16 mentality. Believe it or not we're used to high tempo too and have BTDT and kicked ass with supersonic jets. We're getting the pigs of the fleet for the most part, and why not. If I had a livery and had to give away some jets I'd pick the worn out ones to give away too.
I see the hours, and am in awe. My jet from Osan has 10,500ish hours. That means a lot to me...it means she flew well and flew a lot. What we're finding though is some basic inspection stuff has been overlooked...or maybe just not really looked at. I'm not bad mouthing any Crew Chief, but we're finding grounding items during acceptance...period.
I've lost count on how many nacelle hinges we've found cracked (during an initial walk around). Rt nacelle full hinges they don't even make anymore, so add to the 107s for partial hinge repairs we've done, awaiting parts for full repairs. Pull the gun and drum and EVERY jet has had cracks in the gun bay. IFR checks...none pass...check valves are clogged (easy fix...a couple hours...ours are good now). Canopy pressurization...forget about it. Stay below 10,000! In the last three to four weeks my jet (80-0217) has had EVERYTHING replaced for my rt side hydraulic system...it's all new...and I could have some of my left side hydro stuff replaced but I want it to fly and I'm close to Phase. Rudders pulled for W&B/paint...almost every rudder mount is cracked or bad bearings. This stuff isn't a crack on anybody...it just needs looked at for f'kn safety of flight! My main job is to maintain an aircraft that is SAFE and FMC...and that SHOULD be the same job everyone in my AFSC is striving for. Should I just count on Man Rev getting you home in a training emergency because things are overlooked?
Coach, you may need to get a clue that the jets you \"flew for a living\" might have been okay...WAY back in the day when you were flying them as new jets, but not so much now. And koobster, we're trying to keep the acft safe and reliable to remain able to fly around the clock. These birds are tired and we're trying to keep them up!
My ANG unit had F-16s for 19 years and we never lost a jet or had a class A mishap. And yes my unit flew. Kuwait, PSAB, Jordan, Qatar, Iraq (twice). This had a hell of a lot to do with our maintenance practices. We don't cut corners and have a very high FMC and sortie rate. Fact...last time in Iraq my unit had a higher FMC rate than the F-16s from Hill, Spang, and Misawa...and we had to fill in Alert birds because the AD counterparts had broke jets and couldn't fill the slots.
Most Guard guys have at least 3X the experience and knowledge of the AD counterparts. You can't always think \"weekend warriors\" because the core of the Guard are full time federal technicians with 15-25 years or more. This is my fourth airframe to work since I signed papers in 1986. I cut my teeth on F-4E/G Phantoms for 6 years, worked F-16C/Ds for 6 years, have an A&P and worked for an airline for 4 years and now am back to old school working A-10s for the past year and a half. Put me as a career aircraft maintenance professional up against some kid who joined up 2-3 years ago and is stationed in Korea thinking he knows his stuff but will separate when he can because he really doesn't give a sh*t. *shrug*
Yeah, we Guard guys have a clue.
