For the past few weeks I’ve went back and filtered and organized all my door art. I went through all my disks and found the highest rez images I have and placed all art in folders with the name of the individual who sent me the pictures. I have dates, bases, and tail numbers on each image for historical purposes and built a “master listing” with only the tail numbers for quick reference. In this file I have 476 door art images from all kinds of resources dating back to around 1976, up to today. 2/3 of these images are mine, or I have permission to use the image as I wish. This was something that needed to be done and I’m happy with the results.

As far as I know this is the largest single collection of A-10 door art anywhere and I’m amazed and proud every time I open the files and look at the images.

I do need your help with a few of the pieces of art because I have no info on them. Please take a look at the link below and see if you know anything about any of the art found there. My next step is to figure-out how I want to approach my book(s) and start putting fingers to keyboard. I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

The first door you have on that page belongs to tail 162 of the 75th. I was assigned to that jet when I was a Tigershark, and later took 186 when I went down the street to the 74th. Both jets were with us in Afghanistan in 2005- 186 had a quick sketch done on the door that read: Martyr Maker with a skull and crossbones done. On that deployment, our pro-super tried to work a deal to get a spare door while a jet was down for phase, and we'd slowly work a good series of door art for the deployed birds. Names we had positioned included Terror of the Taliban, Angel of Mercy/Angel of Death (lingerie-clad angel looking into a full length mirror- Grim Reaper looking back)... I can't remember the other ones right now- I'll have to dig out my notes from last year.

Anyways, the story behind Harvester and Martyr-Maker. Both doors were done before a mission when we had stepped out a few minutes earlier than needed. After the pre-flight, I sketched them out in grease pencil (hence only two-colors: red and black) with the crew-chief's consent. Harvester is based on the Metallica song with the Reaper image foretelling the fate of our enemy on the battlefield. Martyr Maker was based on the same drawing I sketched onto the back of my flight helmet during deployed ops (Life support always tried to remove it until I claimed it was a good luck "talisman" that had gotten me through 4 prior deployments. The design always came off upon our redeployment, but since that helmet has been retired, the design has reappeared...) Since our enemies are oh-so-willing to "martyr" themselves for the cause, I figured I'd do my best to assist them in their goal. Hence, 186 took the name, Martyr-Maker. I wish I'd had the time and ability to do the doors up properly, ala my first door on 177 in Korea, "Miss Behavin'"

As an afterthought, both jets ended up at Nellis about 6 months after that deployment and still had the sketches on the doors- don't know if they've lasted more than a year or not, but that's the story behind that little grease-pencil on the door.

Cheers,
Zero

Zero, are you positive about the first one being 162? That used to be my jet for a while BTW. A friend of mine at Pope sent me that picture a few weeks ago. I can't remember which jet it was from, but I coudl have sworn it was a 74th bird. He definitley didn't say it came from 162. I will check my email on Monday and see whhat he said.
FYI- 177's door was still in great shape when I was at Osan (03-04)

Thanks for the info Zero, you wouldn't happen to have a picture of "Martyr Maker" would you? <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

Jack, I will stand-by on the tail number until you and Zero can check your documents.

Martyr Maker, that's the one that came down to vist and I didn't have a camera with me. So, it's still on the door or was as of a month ago...

Jackb,
When I was a Shark, from 2000-2003, 162 was a checker-tail. Since Pope plays that shell game from time to time to even out the AMUs, they may have switched the tails to a 74th bird. Since it was the jet I'd been assigned to while at that end of the street, I did that door art over there. I've been lucky to be assigned to those two jets since they make toys with those tail numbers on them. There's a 1:140 die cast model of 162, and 186 has the 1:48 scale franklin mint model, and is the jet painted on the Burma to Baghdad print. The other way that I remember the jets (and how I chose them) was that they both were LARS modified a/c, and our Sandy One Rescue Mission Commander's would take a LARS jet if it was available for CSAR missions.
Unfortunately, I don't have a picture of the Martyr-Maker, but I can get a shot of the helmet (same design). The crew chief at the time was Justin "Colonel" Sanders- he did up a cool design for the forms binder that matched the door art. I've been thinking of drawing up all the door art designs just to have them- maybe I can get them put onto vinyl or something down the road for the jets as they go into theater. If/when I do, I'll share them here. Hope the info helps.
Cheers,
Zero

Only one jet changed squadrons while I was in the 75th (also from 00-03). It was 81-0953 came from the 74th to us after 78-0676 crashed. I was the ACC on 162 from Aug 2001 to Oct 2002.

I must've gotten put on the jet after you- I don't remember which pilot had it prior to me... and I don't think I ever got my name on it due to timing- the jet went to depot before the 75th deployed to OIF, (which was about a month or two after I was assigned to it) and I went to Weapons School that summer, and then I went down the street in Dec 2004. "Johnnie Bravo" took the jet after I did, and his name was still on it when the 74th deployed in 2005. 162s DCC is here at Nellis with us now, although he showed up as QA on the ramp... I think that's forgiveable- the same thing happened to Osans 177 DCC when he came to Pope- another great CC.
