As I was going through my database I find a mystery with the door art Runnin’ With the Devil. In Randy Walkers book “More Painted Ladies” he listed this door as being on aircraft 75-0285 but, in one of the pictures sent to me by my AMARC contact it looks like the tail-number of the aircraft is 76-0285. My database shows all 76 model A-10 where in the 500 series but there was/is a 75-0285. Look at this enlargement of the picture and tell me what you think. I tend to believe my data and Randy also listed it on as a 75 model but, by god how do you explain this photo? If it was a little blurrier I might tend to think it was my eyes but you be the judge.
Ever heard of an aircraft having the wrong serial number painted on the side of the aircraft?? I’m going to get with my contact and see if he can check AMARC’s records and see if they listed this aircraft as a 75 or 76 but, either way this is a little strange…

Joe....I have seen more than one aircraft get the wrong tail number painted on the jet when markings were reapplied after a new paint job. I remember 285 at D-M and it was a 75 model. The definitive info would be the data plate in the cockpit on the turtledeck.

In the 90's when 78-631 was repainted, it had different numbers on nose and tail. One showed78-631, other was 79-631.

Thanks Mark, with your information, Randy’, and my data I’m 99.9% sure that it is 75. I never really noticed any jets with the wrong numbers on them…maybe because I wasn’t really looking. I’ll have to send this info to AMARC to make sure their records are correct, it’s probably only wrong on the side of the jet but who knows. Thanks for the help guys.
