Before I take the time to try to get permission to use some stuff in my book I wanted to get you guys/gals opinions on if I really need to or not. What I’m wondering is do I need to include images of the sources of some of the door art in my book? What I mean is do I need to include an images of stuff like the heavy Metal magazine covers which were used to make a few doors, or the album cover used to make Dangerous Toy?

I will include the info like the Heavy Metal cover dates and the name of the band (Dangerous Toys) and album title which all can all be found online. The question is would including an image of things like this add to the book or take-up space that could hold other door art images?

Thanks in advance for your opinions.

Tough call Dice. I think it would be a good ideal to go ahead and get the permission regardless of weither you use it or not. The only reason I say that is because the images are so close to the real thing that it could cover some form of copyright infringment. Also it would depend of if this is going to be an actual printed book or an e-book. If it's an e-book I would think a link to the original art work would suffices.

Hitler, I'm hoping this will be a regular book but, if I can't get it published I will post it on my site with links like you've suggested. Thanks for your opinion.

I worked years ago by a publisher. And I know that you need permission for pictures that you use. But these doorarts are allready a copy of a real cover of a magazine. So I don't know if you have to ask permission for that. Maybe the best is, that you call or mail the owner/publisher of the magazines and ask them what you should to do.
Good luck.

I actually don't think you would Dice,
Reason \"You didn't copy the Art\" Case in point.
You think that \"The Painted Ladies\" series of books on Older Nose art had to get permission from \"Disney, or another Company\" to use their \"Art form\" to Publish it?
Its just like the \"Homer Simpson and Garfield \" Cartoons painted on Gulf War Jets.
I'm sure they didn't get permission to paint them and then the book author didn't in return do it to take the picture.
If that was the case all of \"Our Original\" art work on our doors would be \"That Crews Property and they would have to \"Pay me or ask to use it\"

But Thats my own opinion , but almost 1/3 of the door art comes from a \"Idea from a Drawing or Painting etc...\"

Guys, I think you’ve misunderstood my question (all but you Hitler). I know I don’t need permission to use the door arts copied from other sources like the Heavy Metal magazines. What I’m asking is do I need to include the images of the magazine cover itself or, in the case of Dangerous Toy the album cover?

Another example is Miss Behavin‘, I know I can use the picture of the door because it’s a USAF aircraft door, photographed by me, and not a real picture of the model Stacy Sanches but, will it add to my book to include the real picture used to paint the door in the first place, which is copyrighted.

Oh I get it,

Ok I'm slow these days. I 'm split on that one Dice. Like you said before it would take up space for more door art, then again it would show \"Where the idea came from\"
How about a section of the book, where you show \"Examples of Art from Pictures of Magazines, Photo's. Album covers etc....\"
That way you separate \"Original Ideas from \"Expanded Ideas\" showing where some of them come from.

But then again thats just a thought.

Thanks for the input guys, I think I’m going with just the door art itself and give the background info if anyone wants to find the images on the net. Hitler, I’m going to try to get permission for some of the stuff in case I want to us it later down the line.
