I noticed during Hawgsmoke 2004 a few of the door had “stickers” which had been clear-coated over. Does your unit have any like this and, with home computers and cheep printers do you see this being more popular than airbrushing in the future?

I think it is more popular to do vynil stencils if you can because if you ever replace a door you can put the art back on it. I like paint though.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Most of the doors at Eielson are painted. 220 (Terro of the Taliban) and 254 (Ice Queen) are 2 that I easily recall are stickers.

Those real nice stickers or zaps are vynil stencils. They arent regular stickers. They are done on a $ 40,000 printer. Very high resolution. A lot of stickers on jets are vynil now.

They're very similar to vinyl stickers, only not quite as thick.<img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

All you need is a high res scan or photo shop pic and you can print it out on the vinal machine. it will even cut out around the shape for easy peeling. Just add a little transfer tape and stick away!
Our sheet metal/paint guys have the machine in the paint barn and use it to create stencils for pilot boxes etc. it's become our method of choice now because its free and as long as you have the file on a disk you can make more or modify it later.
The pic you have for your avatar was taken from an easy rider magazine, modified, and put on vinal.

It is at our base! painting costs mucho $$$ and this way if the base commander thinks your new door art is not P.C. you just peel it off and try again.

I think this may be a better option for the Guard and Reserves because I can't see the active duty allowing their machines to be used for such as effort.

You are too right Dice. I couldn't even imagine S/M doing anything like that. You have no idea the amout of ass-pain it is just to get names printed for the jets.

Not a big problem with the paint barn when i was at Tyndall. All you needed was a disk with your art. most of the time they would just let me use their machine

Dice those "let's Roll" decals where no more than vinyl stickers. The S/M guys have a machine calle the GerberEdge that makes the transfers. It is the way to go. No hazard waste to deal with later. NASCAR teams are using this method to put the sponsors on the cars. Although I think they may heat shrink theirs on?

Fender, I know what you're talking about with the "lets roll" sticker but, there also seems to be a trend of makeing door art with these machines. It might just be me but I think airbrush is the only way to go...

I agree that the painted doors look much better but for a CC on a budget stickers are the way to go!
Last phase i took my door to an artist to get a quote and he said $300-$400.
I wish someone at the base had some artistic talent so it would only cost me a case of beer and maybe a pizza?
