I'm doing history research for the 55th Fighter Squadron dating back to it's inception. One of the big holes is information on the A-10 era. I would like to make contact with former members of the squadron from that time at Shaw. Dennis |

Not sure about the pilots here, but I know Dice, Myself and a couple other maintainers that visit this board were stationed there. If you have questions fire away or send a pm.. |

Thanks for the quick response. Here goes: when did the first A-10s arrive at Shaw? When did the squadron stand-up? Were the maintainers in the 55th or in Wing maintenance squadron? Do you have a tail number list of the A-10's? Do you have a bio of Neubauer and/or Vigil? When did the squadron stand down? When did the last A-10 leave Shaw? For where? That's it for starters. I'm always looking for newspaper articles, official orders to back up any dates and actions. Thanks again. |

I would have to look through my \"stuff\" to see what I have but, I know a lot of answers to your questions can be found in Don Logan's first book on the A-10 Republic's A-10 Thunderbolt II A pictorial guide. We're getting ready for an LSAT inspection here so I'm working long hours but, I can look to see what I have this weekend. I'm pretty sure I have a tail number listing and some pictures at the very least. |

I'll have to go through my records but I may be able to help with some of these answers. Give me a day or two and I'll see what I can come up with. Just remembered a little more info, Dice correct me if I'm wrong When the A-10's initally arrived at Shaw they were assigned to the 507th Tactical Air Control WIng, 20th Tactical Air Support Squadron. The 20th TASS and 21st TASS (flying OV-10's at the time) later combined to create the 21st Fighter Squadron which eventually became the 55th Fighter Squadron. I'll have to ck my records a little more indepth to come up with actual dates. Initally we were assigned to a maintenance squadron, then as the Air Force changed mentality we transfered over to the Fighter Squadron Here are a some of the tail numbers that were assigned at Shaw 81-1990 (i belive the year model was a 79)-208 79-9189 80-0170 (later moved to Moody with the 70th FS, Moody AFB until it untimely demise. 80-0144 81-1979 and a little blurp from the Shaw AFB website Quote: It was transferred and reactivated on Jan. 1, 1994, to its present home, Shaw Air Force Base, flying the A-10 Thunderbolt II. In July 1996, the squadron transferred its aircraft to Pope Air Force Base, N.C., and stood down.
