Any old Bentwaters & Woodbridge folks around from the 80's?
I was Transient Alert @ Aviano in the good old days before they got the wing from Torrejon! What a life.....Crew Chief being assigned to a base with no acft assigned to it!
I remember the deployments we'd get in from from time to time from those guys. One in particular,if memory serves me correctly, was sometime in '82.
1 Jet was lost in Southern part of the country on a Tuesday, driver safely ejected. 2nd Hog took a stroll into a corn field a few days later. Landed as a 2 ship and the 1st one apparently just "forgot" to slow down? LOL
Acft ended going thru overrun, across perimeter raod, thru base fence, across a major Italian roadway, then 20 or so rows deep into a corn field.
Being crash-recovery, I arrived shortly after his nose gear collapsed, and he burrowed nose 1st into the corn! Buried it almost to the base of the windscreen!
From looking around the site here, I am sure there are a few who where there for this as well and have more info from the Bentwaters side.
I remember all they told us about the 1st one that crashed, I think it was near Pisa, is that the pilot heard an unfamiliar tone and punched? Still sounds flakey to me 20+ years later! LOL
Although some of the jockeys I knew, it might not be so far off! LOL
