sorry 30mm the Navion is a Differnt aircraft than the F-82, It was basically the same aircraft with a Widened fuselage (4 place) and a differnt powerplant.

Korean war saw extensive use of the L17 as Spotter Observer aircraft

Actually the Ryan navion was developed by ex-navy types that wanted the performance of military aircraft for their personal use. It just happened to end up being used for military use besides. The fueselage design was designed from early Grumman Cat series aircraft. I asked the same questions about the navion and got the answers from the president of the local Navion Chapter.

It’s really irrelevant of the Tuskegee pilots lost bombers providing fighter escort, it takes nothing away from what they accomplished….Yeager’s fighter group lost bombers on escort missions, as did Gabreski’s. They performed to a high standard and helped to break down some of the racial barriers that existed during those times, and provided an example for the next generation of African American fighter pilots to follow. Maj. Emmet Hatch USAF ret. who served with Yeager when he commanded an F-86 squadron in Europe credited Gen Benjamin O. Davis Jr. for providing the inspiration to join the USAF and become a fighter pilot. The fact that they were trumped up as never losing a bomber was an unnecessary publicity stunt…No one bats 1,000 or has a perfect QB rating. I am as proud of them as I am of the “Red Ball Express” drivers that kept the rapidly expanding supply lines flowing to the allied troops advancing after the Normandy invasion, or who can forget SN Dorie Miller’s heroics in manning an anti aircraft gun (in which he had no training on) while serving aboard the USS West Virginia during the Pearl Harbor raid. He later would be awarded the Navy Cross and lose his life when the escort carrier he served on the Liscome Bay was sunk near the Gilbert Islands.

They were all examples of the best America had to offer, and my hats off to them along with all members of the greatest generation.
