and on an entirely unrelated note, here is a small webpage that lists just about every NATO reporting name for Warsaw pact/Chinese aircraft, including those from Boeing and Consolidated!!(but not anything much newer than Flanker)
Save it to disc ,it's only 30K !!

Me to sniper...I just love all the doors that pop open (which will be a maintenance nightmare...just imagine all the doors you'll have to rig...or if one doesn't open up correctly...) But she does look cool...Boeings version, that was an ugly aircraft

Looking at the pictures, I'm with Boomer...

It's like one of those transformer toys, you know something that can change from a toy plane to a toy truck.

Only this changes from a cool looking plane to a damn ugly multi million $$$ advent calendar <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> with a bad case of brewers droop <img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>...

I saw the Boeing jet back when it was just a tiny chunk of metal in a wind tunnel and fell in love with that "shark jaw", the later incarnations just got uglier and uglier.

Woh,

That Boeing thing is rough. I saw a programme about the battle between Boeing and LM for the contract a few weeks ago and I could have sworn it didn't look that bad…

It's got a serious case of 'slack jawed yokel' about it don't you think?

OK, from the front the JSF looks not to bad, but I still say from the rear, it looks like its old man ain't ever going to stand to attention…

Who remember the Simpson's episode were Side Show Bob steals an A-Bomb from the air show.

I still wet myself with laughter when I watch it and the air show commentator says…

"And here's the pride of the American Air Force…The British made Harrier"

ROTFLMAO <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_tongue.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

Yup, they're both extremely ugly. The one on the left (bottom pic) is uglier though.

Havent replied in awhile =-0

The F-35 wont have to worry about IR signature with the BAE Systems TADIRCM advancement of only protruding 3.5 inches into the slip stream and thereby not compromising stealth.

The engine is actually nearing 40,000 lbs of thrust and should be increasable to compensate for the overwieght. The JSF STOVL version will be able to take off with tanks that are not topped off to reduce wieght...but I agree overall....Lockheed was a bit less than forthcoming.

And finally...I dont know what the hell Boeing was thinking when they entered that monstrosity into the competition. I think the designer must have matserbated to pictures of the A7 or something. I first saw that bird and knew there was no way in hell and pilot wanted to pimp that creature at an airshow. I mean seriously.....someone at Phantom Works actually looked at that plane and thought its configuration was a good idea..........?

The McD version WAS a gas driven fan similar to the Lockheed design without the shaft, it was configured as I recall much like the original lockmart with canards and all the surfaces (wings vert stabs and canards) were pointy. Upon realising this wasn't going to work, they shifted to a thrust plus lift config, with I think 2 verticle engines mounted behind the cockpit ala YAK-38. One selling point they tried was that the plane could RTB with just the lift engines going if the main engine had been damaged, this was the one with the butterfly tail and no canards much like the YF-23, they also developed an engine exhaust nacelle with tiny sawtooth edges all around the end rim of the VG nozzle for stealth, this has been talked about as a possibility for the F-35.

Does anybody know how many billions were actually spent on the A-12 before they called it quits?

apparently the flap system didnt work well enough since they had to go to a conventional wing tail layout to lower the approach speed more to make the Navy happy.

Nothing would have saved the A-12 since the Pentagon never stopped changing the requirements.

So the Pentagon was at fault for the Flying Dorito getting cancelled, not the Navy?

Plenty of blame to go around, but I think if you keep moving the bullseye you'll never hit the target.

I remember somebody talking about a torpedo bomber contract back in like the late 30s. One company re-rigged an old bi-plane to carry a torpedo(Fairy aircraft maybee?)the other company came up with a superslick monoplane with an enclosed torpedo bay, very fast, long range etc. At the last minit the Gov made the torpedo 6 inches longer and gave them no time to rework anything, so the slick plane was out and the biplane was purchased, same old same old.
