Mexico selects Sukhoi Su-27 for strategic surveillance
The Mexican navy has selected Sukhoi’s Su-27 over the Saab/BAE Systems Gripen to equip its first air defence unit.

Head of the service Adm Armando Sánchez Moreno says the new fleet of 10 fighters will enable the navy to carry out “strategic surveillance” over key areas of Mexico’s coastline.

Preliminary selection work was initiated in early 2005, and the navy is now entering into contract negotiations with Russia’s Rosboronexport agency for the purchase of eight single-seat Su-27s and two Su-27UB two-seat trainers. Local sources indicate that the entire package – which also includes spare parts, tools and personnel training – is worth slightly over $410 million.

WTF? Mexico has a Navy?

Mexico is run by druglords and corrupt politicians who have forced their own population to violate the borders and laws of the soverign foreign nation to the North and now they feel a need for an aircraft with offensive capabilities?

This has got to be a joke - a country who can't even provide for basic human services is buying fancy military equipment? Newsflash for you Paco/Pedron/Vicente, if the US wanted your land they A) wouldn't have given it back to you after the US military marched down the streets of Mexico City and B) with just the military assets in the State of Texas alone they could overtake the Nation within a matter of days.

Point being that Mexico not only needs not to waste the money the illegals are sending back from working (illegally) in the United States, but the UN should impose sanctions on them just as they should Iran for trying to pursue nuclear capabilities.

Su-27's for Mexico, that just makes no sense!

The Mexicans know how to ride donkeys, so it makes a lot of sense to get something that flies like one.

they were evaluating the Saab’s Gripen and SU-27 to replace its 'old as hell 'F-5E/F
Although helicopters are WAY more important.
They can be used for so much more.(search and rescue, humanitarian …)

and remember Venezuela has that Crazy president 'Chaves', that México hates, because FOX defended US policy in Latin America! witch P.O. Chavez and broke off all relations.
No one remember that?

quote:
Mexican navy to get more muscle
The Mexican navy is considering a significant expansion to its aviation element in response to concerns over its ability to protect key areas such as the Bay of Campeche oil field. Already nearing the end of a five-year programme to modernise its current fixed and rotary wing assets, the service is looking to increase the sophistication of eight aircraft sought to perform air defence and maritime strike tasks.

Mexico’s naval aviation authorities have previously examined options such as the possible procurement of Aero Vodochody’s L-159, but have now set their sights on a more capable platform, recently examining Saab’s Gripen and Sukhoi’s Su-27 as possible candidates.
Efforts to modernise the navy’s existing aircraft fleets are meanwhile nearing completion. The service recently received its fourth of eight EADS Casa C-212s configured for counter-drug and search-and-rescue duties. Equipped with a Raytheon SeaVue radar, FLIR Systems Star Safire sensor payload and EADS Casa’ FITS maritime surveillance suite, the remainder will follow by mid-2006. Two of the aircraft were upgraded to the C-212-400 standard in Spain, with the rest to be modified in Mexico at the navy’s Veracruz maintenance facility.
An upgrade to 11 of the navy’s MBB Bo105 helicopters is meanwhile scheduled for completion next October. In a move to expand its rotorcraft inventory, the service is also looking to acquire five Mil Mi-17TV1 transport helicopters.
