B-52 Mistakenly Carried Nukes

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - A B-52 bomber was mistakenly loaded with five nuclear warheads during a flight from North Dakota to Louisiana, a newspaper reported Wednesday.

The bomber carried advanced cruise missiles as part of a Defense Department program to retire 400 of the missiles, the Military Times said, quoting three officers who spoke on condition they remain anonymous because they were not authorized to discuss the incident.

The officers said the nuclear warheads should have been removed before the missiles were mounted onto pylons under the bomber's wings for the Aug. 30 flight from Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota to Barksdale Air Force Base in Louisiana, the newspaper said Wednesday.

A Minot Air Force Base spokeswoman, Sgt. Marelise Wood, referred questions by The Associated Press to the Air Force secretary's office in Washington. A spokesman there was out of the office Wednesday morning and not immediately available for comment.

An Air Force spokesman, Lt. Col. Ed Thomas, told the Military Times that the weapons were in Air Force control at all times and the missiles were safely transferred.

Air Force policy does not permit officials to say whether nuclear warheads were involved, Thomas said.

However, he said all nuclear weapons at Minot were accounted for.

\"Air Force standards are very exacting when it comes to munitions handling,\" Thomas said. \"The weapons were always in our custody and there was never a danger to the American public.\"

He said an investigation was launched and the crews involved in loading the missiles were decertified pending corrective action or training.


I know I've been out for a while , but what happened to the \"PRP\"?????
The weapons loaders had to have know they were live.

But in any case , How did it \"Leak out\"???

Unless they changed things the \"Cruise missile\" Air Frame , wings, fuselage,engine etc... except for the war head was back then \"APG\" because you could have your name on one as the \"Crew Chief\" it was a special assignment in the early 80's I applied for it but didn't have 5 years in yet and turned down.

Can you guys explain to me what the real problem is here? We used to have live nukes in the air all the time and no-one spazzed out about it. Even dropped several un-armed nukes on Spain after an accident. So what is the big deal here? Why did the airman even bother saying anything about it?

This screw up was of such epic porportion that ACC is having a command wide stand-down on Friday. I mean no flying, no maintenace, commanders get in your face stand-down. It should provide some good entertainment.

please tell me these idiot could not have armed these weapons with their short cuts.

There's a bunch of codes they need to properly arm them. They could take off the safeties, but without those codes--some of which go clear up to the president's football--I don't think you can even launch them(I was never in on that part, ACLMs were just in the CDCs for me).

Among the more interesting spinoffs was a story claiming that China hacked the Pentagon, and cut the orders and such needed for this, and a story saying that it was a strike on Syria that someone leaked and called off.

Imagine the implications had these idiots loaded one of these on mid east bound bomber headed towards say Iran on training mission. Then an accident happened similar to the one off of spain during the cold war, but this time the bomb fell in a desert.
