That is a lower case \"L\". It is actually Il-76, the Il being short for Ilyushin.

I got to see these a little while back, and they do take forever to takeoff...about 8000 ft from what I saw. Not as bad as the Antanov we had in here a while back though...I thought it was back-taxiing down the runway until it started to rotate!
