Finally, a good start to my story. This'll probably be within the first few chapters of the first book.

I thought of something last night after I'd gone to bed. I realized that perhaps a thirty inch barrel is a bit much for a shotgun. Any one go some input on this?

There are hunting shotguns with 30" barrels.

A riot type shotgun will typicly be limited to no more than 24" though, and are most commonly between 18 and 22".

A combat shotgun is more useful with a shorter barrel because it gives a wider dispersal of the pattern. I'd go with something along the lines of a 18" barrel.

An' go to your Gawd like a soldier."

Cool. I've seen riot guns close up, and there's not much space beyond the magazine to attach the blade. I think I'll change that to a 22" barrel.

Anyone closer than six feet would get the blade, incorporating the shotgun was to increase the combat radius to about thirty feet or something like that. Beyond that he'd probably have a carbine to fall back on if he was short on backup.

An 18" bbl shotgun with a cylinder bore choke(standard for riot guns) will have an effective range of about 30 meters with 00 buck and about 65 meters with a .50cal sabot slug.

Thanks. How would a smaller buckshot do? Thus far I've figured that he'd have available an APFSDS round that would do alot more than your .50 cal slug, an explosive slug, and what I was thinking would be a giant paint pellet, less than lethal because it breaks up on impact; and probably flechette. I've not really looked into what kind of ammo to give him.

Another good idea for a round is a acid filled .76cal ball(12 gauge is .76cal) for breaching walls and such.

Might also want an incindiary pellet(starting fires) and probably some sort of chem pellet(be it lethal or not).

Perhaps a 12 gauge proximity mine as well. That would be very useful. ;)

00 buck is pretty much the 'industry standard' for APERS duty, but flechettes would be even better, and probably extend the range by 10 meters, to about 45 meters.

A .30 cal APFSDS penetrator would probably exceed 3000fps and have a range similar to a short barreled rifle, maybe 300 meters.

The thing I was seeing was that flechette would handle advanced body armor better than 00. He's got that nifty bursting charge for doors and walls and such, or the explosive slug would work.

The less-than-lethal round was to be a paint pellet. It bursts while transfering its kinetic energy to the target, without causing major damage. It would also mark the target, or it would be a tearing or coughing agent. The armor is universal protection, all he really needs is an oxygen source and heat management system to work in vacuum.

I figured that an APFSDS would be good. I was also thinking about what a squeeze bore effect with a full choke would do to the velocity, but I decided it's not worth working.

Full choke is a no-no for sabot slugs.

This would have been designed for it, or something less. The big idea was to get the squeeze bore effect, which isn't really practical.
