The computer question is at the bottom so if you don't want to hear my rant on this book I"M TRYING TO WRITE please scroll to he bottom.

This book is driving me friggin' nuts! I started the first chapter a few months ago and was doing pretty good THEN I pick-up Don Logans book and his first chapter is exactly what I had in mind! I've shelved chapter I for later and it will be shorter and more condenced than I had planed.

I've tried to write chapter II (post Desert Storm base realiments and closures) a few hundered times and every time I start I go to check my facts and either can't find what I'm looking for or, the info is not what I expected/thought was true.

Take today I was trying to find ther reason(s) Benkwaters/Woodbridge/Alconberry closed in past BRAC reports and can't find them anywhere. Was these bases closed under BRAC? I thought BRAC was the only system set-up for base closures!!
I guess what it comes to is I haven't done enough research or I need to go with more a feeling based book instead of a fact based book. Hell maybe I just don't have a book in me!

Now here's where the computer question comes in. Like a dumb-ass I saved a lot of my data in excel format and I don't have excel on my home computer. This was just something I was so used to having at work that I never thought about not having it at home! Now I can't get to 90% of my info! I tried to have word convert it but a BIG no-go on that. Q- is there a (free) program that will convert this info into another format? IF not can you (me) buy only excel without having to buy the whole office package...over $200 friggin' dollors!

Hehe sorry for the rant but I have so little to show for so much work!!

Dice, er I mean Hogpen13

Are you using windows XP? If so and it's a newer version I've found that I can open excell programs with Microsoft Spreedsheet. It dosen't do all the options that excel does but it may solve your problem.

Hope it helps and DON'T give up on the book.

I can't help with the computer stuff but, WR and AR were shut down as a result of the downsizing of USAFE brought on by the coming down of the Berlin wall and end of the Cold War.
It was assumed that 6 squadrons of Hogs were no longer needed in Europe because there were no more hordes of Russkie tanks to massacre.
Not sure if it appeared in BRAC though.
The Bentwaters closure was perversly announced the day after a brand new housing complex and commissary was opened at the base.
Good luck with the book Hogpen 13.

Hogpen, BRAC only considers CONUS bases, nothing overseas. Overseas bases are handled by treaty and status of forces agreements between the host country and the US.
