ROFL this aricle is great. Not only does the A-10 have a Nav pod now but it adds as he said"

"This adds a capability to the A-10 that it did not have before -- the ability to drop precision-guided bombs.

“When we are flying close-air support missions, the troops on the ground want precision munitions -- bringing laser-guided munitions to the fight is a great bonus for the A-10.”"

I guess PAVE PENNY is chop liver cause the A-10 NEVER dropped prescion munitions before. Oh well..it was just a reporter droning on.

Reporters have a long standing habit of writing the story with the easiest research or just what they are told. No wonder the bulk of us loathe them and their lazy sensationalism sooooo much. So, is this navigation pod going to come with the electronic WSO package and corinthian leather too?

Although not used currently, the pod does have some limited nav capabilities. Read here...http://www.af.mil/factsheets/factsheet_print.asp?fsID=114&page=1

From the last article
"The pod is equipped with a laser designator for precise delivery of laser-guided munitions, a laser rangefinder provides information for various avionics systems, for example, navigation updates, weapon deliveries and target updates."

Just a thought.....I am not aware of any navigational updates it gives to anything. It acts only as a bus monitor and has no two way communication what-so-ever with anything on the airframe. The pod is only there to find the target and designate the target for the pilot. I don't care what any article says anywhere.....the pod DOES NOT UPDATE ANYTHING NAVIGATIONALLY!!!! What engineers are trying to do now with intigrating the pod into the IFFCC computer workings may help update items in the future. However, as it is used right now in the guard and reserve world of the mighty Hawg the targeting pod is just a big camera that waits for the aircraft to tell it where it is looking and what the plane is doing. Sorry to rain on whoever put out that fact sheet but they do not have the correct info on that page as well.

I put out that info with the exact intent which you explained. I'm at Eglin and I know who you are chili. I'm Bernard's old supervisor from Moody. All I was saying is the "capability" is there even though the A-10 may not use it. The pod is used on other airframes that may use it. As you said, as we further integrate the pod, we may gain more of it's capabilities. One example would be mark offsets using the pod.

I deal with them by being on swingshift and expediting, I hardly see them at all. If I get lucky next week I'll have my ticket to production.
