Air National Guard Fighter Fires At School In New Jersey
Incident Happened On Training Mission

LITTLE EGG HARBOR, N.J. -- A National Guard F-16 fighter jet on a nighttime training mission Wednesday fired 25 rounds of ammunition that tore through an elementary school. No one was injured.

The military is investigating the incident that damaged Little Egg Harbor Intermediate School shortly after 11 p.m.

Police were called to the area when a custodian heard what sounded like someone running across the roof of the school. The custodian was the only person in the school at the time.

Police Chief Mark Siino on Thursday said police officers noticed punctures in the roof. Ceiling tiles had fallen into class rooms and there were scratch marks in the asphalt outside the building.

The 2-inch long bullets are made of lead and do not explode, said Col. Brian Webster, commander of the 177th Fighter Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard.

It was unclear why the shots were fired, Webster said.

Schools in New Jersey were closed Thursday because of a teachers convention.

If it was a NJ Guard Jet it was probably 119th FS. They've done a lot of good work with Noble Eagle.

Wouldn't have sounded like that had an A-10 rolled in there. But, of course, we most likely could have positively identified our target.

Tiny the real question is would only 25 rounds have been fired if it was an A-10 and would the building still be there today. lol

the range has been there MUCH longer than the school. I'm betting it was a pure accident and that he may not have even triggered the gun on purpous.

There are several schools within 3-5 miles of poinsette range here at Shaw AFB. It just happened to work out that way. Also Vette why would the viper drivers not practice cannon fire at night?

If they light their buildings there like I'm familiar with, you'd see immediately that it's not part of the range.

Could be a slip of the finger if he going around some other part of the pattern other than the final portion (the portion where you're heading to the target and fire). On any range I've been on (with the exception of the now-closed strafe pits at Koon-Ni in Korea), the pilot hasn't been required to safe the master arm after each pass and arm it before each roll-in. I've seen inadverent firings occur twice at the Goldwater range, once on Range 2 and the other time on South TAC. Both were apparently just accidental squeezes of the trigger while in a turn or something else.......one of those "keep your finger off the trigger unless you're pointing at what you want to shoot". Though I'm not familiar with the particular range pattern at Warren Grove, nor the reg supps for that range; my money is on this possibility. This is one of the only things that would explain such as short burst, as would the school's location in relation to the range flight pattern.

The jet that fired the rounds was assigned to the 113th Wing of the District of Columbia Air National Guard, based at Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland. The plane returned there after firing the shots, Webster said.

He would not identify the pilot or detail possible disciplinary measures.

Mike Dupuis, president of the township's Board of Education, said school workers are mindful that the firing range is nearby.

The 2,400-acre Warren Grove range, about 30 miles north of Atlantic City, has been used by the military since the end of World War II, long before the surrounding area was developed.

I was just at Andrews a few weeks ago and got to see the 113th. I also was one of the ten out my ROTC group that got the coolest ride I'll ever get in Downtown D.C. with the 1st helicopter Squadron.
