1979-1981 Cobra package - The other third generation Mustang “Cobra” produced by Ford was actually an option package available on 1979-1981 Mustangs. The 1979-1981 Cobra package, offered on base hatchback models (non-Ghia), was primarily a graphics/cosmetic package with a few performance enhancements thrown in for good measure. The Cobra package equipment included: turbocharged 2.3L (with optional 5.0L V-8 (’79) or 4.2L V-8 (’80-’81)); TRX suspension, wheels and tires; sport-tuned exhaust; Cobra graphics (with optional Cobra hood graphics or graphics delete (’81)); dual black remote side view mirrors; color-keyed quarter-window louvers; forward facing hood scoop (’79); Pace Car front spoiler with Marchal foglights; rear spoiler and rear facing hood scoop (’80-’81); external (’79-’81) and interior blackout treatment('80-'81). The 1980-1981 Cobra packages included large “Cobra” lettering in the center of the rear spoiler very similar to the 1985 Canadian Cobra GT. The 1979-1981 Cobra package was offered in both the U.S. and in Canada. The new 1982 Mustang GT replaced the 1981 Cobra in the Mustang model line-up.

Out of approximately 370,000 Mustangs made that year, 47,568 were 5.0L. With the exterior/interior color combo, It could be considered "rare" (tongue in cheek)

Not sure what they are trying to pass off in that picture.

It has a 5.o badge.

The Turbo SVO's were 2.3L/2.5 (1979-1984)

Basic Forms

Draw-thru carburated
Non-intercooled EFI
Intercooled EFI

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Draw-thru was available on the 1979-1981(?) Mustang Cobras and the prominent Official Pace car making a whooping 132Bhp! How does doing the 1/4 mile in 17.3 seconds strike you? Me neither.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Non-Intercooled EFI was available on the following:

83-84 Mustang GT
83-84 Mecury Capri RS
83-86 Thunderbird
85-89 Merkur XR4Ti
In 145hp versions, it managed to move the big ThunderBarge to the tune of 16.5@80MPH! The Capri RS and Mustang GT could cut that down to 16.1@85MPH. I know. I have done it.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Last but not least are the intercooled EFI motors available in the following:

84-86 Mustang SVO
87-88 Thunderbird TurboCoupe
The 84-85 SVOs used a smaller camshaft, 30#/hr injectors, and single exhaust and were rated at 175HP. The 84 SVO used a 3.45:1 rear gear. Pending was the flush headlight system, so a recessed bulb was used.

The 85.5-86 SVOs used a larger profile camshaft, 35#/hr injectors, and were rated at 205HP. Flush headlights and dual exhaust are a noticable change.

??? Not sure what you mean here...There was an optional 5.0L available to take place of the 2.3 Turbo. I had an '80 2.3 Turbo Cobra. From memory, the 2.3 had more HP than the 4.2 in 1980...LOL

The SVO mustangs were a little faster than the regular GTs most years the SVO was made.

The one in the pic isn't an SVO though...wrong kind of hood scoop and wing.
