Hey guys, i figured taht you would be a good group to ask this question too, and see if i can get some help.

This guy friend of mine that i am dating is interested in turning his life around and joining the Air Force Reserves to gain some money for college and get some training for a law enforcement career of some type in the future. I was hoping that someone had some decent tips that i might be able to pass on to him!

Being the resident LE. Guy here, I will tell you that unfortunately Most States are Not accrediting Military Police Training as Transferable to P.O.S.T. Certification. But that is not a Bad thing either. The Postive of Doing a LE type Job in the Military is that You begin developing the interpersonal skills required for Field Investigation, public relations, and the patterns of mindset that are required to Detect and Prevent Crime. This Can be invaluable skillset to aquire,When you do pursue a law enforcement career in civillian life.

Their is always a positive to serving in the guard and reserves. The Marine Corps reserve is how i started my Military career and attended college fulltime. The Financial benefits today are really awesome as compared to my generation.

I personally believe the Air Force security police are closer to the same roles and responsebilities of Civilian police Patrolman, When you look atthe immense facilities and property that Require protection. Then you add in the Coed Lifestyle Barracks and you have in effect a Micro city that you will be working in serviceing that community.

The Army and the Coast guard are even more differnt in that fact that they typically are training more these days into Humanitarian operations and martial law aspects of an occupying army. The Coast Guard does purely Immigration andcoastal security. Narcotics and Smuggling are their major Focus.

So if you look at the whole picture. Attaining skillsets in the military are invaluable becasue your work is soft handed and under some very good leadership and supervision. When you do attend a Civillian POST Police Academy. It sets you so much further ahead of your class, and makes you more appealing to hireing agencies. That is the truth to most Jobs. if you have it together you are marketable. And that is what every young person needs to grab a succesfull foothold into a career.

Those are just a few of my thoughts... Having been in it for a couple years now.

What was your MOS in the marine reserves, M.P.?
I have a relative in the gaurd that has an MOS of armor and now they're doing security work. However, they are getting great benefits for college and insurance.

Have your friend check with the local Air Guard unit. If they have an SP (Security Police) slot open or opening, he can be sent to basic with that in mind and probably stay at Lackland for his SP tech training. He'd then have a guaranteed weekend warrior job with the benefits Mudd mentioned. If he likes it enough, it could even be parlied into a fulltime job. My son looked into that posibility but chose being a crew chief, instead. He's never looked back.

Tell him not to go into the Army as an MP. The LE angle is being reduced and "civilianized". He would do far better (future career wise) to go in the AF as a SP (or whatever the're called this week).
