Here is some good INFO for most of us here. A VA employee had taken home an electronic data file that contained veterans' names, birth dates and social security numbers, as well as some spousal information and some disability ratings. The burglary reportedly occurred May 3. The VA employee has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of investigations by the FBI and local law enforcement officials. PVA President Randy L. Pleva Sr. expressed concern for these recent events. "I find it deeply troubling that the VA has allowed the personal information of so many millions of veterans to be compromised," stated Pleva. "Even more troubling is the fact that the VA did not notify the public about this incident until nearly three weeks after the information was stolen." The VA has reported that no electronic health records or financial information was taken. The VA intends to send out notification letters to all veterans affected. Veterans can also go to http://www.firstgov.gov as well as http://www.va.gov/opa to get more information on this matter. Additionally, the VA has established a manned call center that veterans may call to get information about this situation and learn more about consumer identity protections. That toll-free number is 800-FED-INFO (333- 4636). The call center will be open beginning today, and will operate from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. (EDT), Monday through Saturday as long as it is needed. "PVA hopes that the VA holds all individuals involved in this matter properly accountable for their actions," Pleva emphasized. "Simply placing this individual on administrative leave for jeopardizing the lives of so many veterans is wholly unacceptable." Snipe, your info is on the list I would say with 99.9% if you served after 1975 or were seen in a VA hospital anytime during that period your on that Disk. Just make sure your bases are covered the best you can. But this IDIOT WHO DID THIS SHOULD BE FIRED!!!!!! This its better everyday now the 2.2 million Active Duty ,Reserve and National Guard troops were on that LapTop too thats roughly 80% of the service. Oh they did fire the Person ,but there was really no "Rule" broken because the VA really didnt have any "Guidelines" on Unsercured information. LITTLE TOO LATE I had to buy ID theft protection , call all my creditors, and its just a PAIN IN THE ASS! I think that anyone who knew during that 3 week period and didnt report until someone overheard it at THE WATER COOLER at one of the ASST office they ALL SHOULD GET THE BOOT! Just got this from my Commander: Commanders and Directors, BLUF: Below is an update on the AF plan of action RE: potential compromise of Privacy Information STATUS: - DFAS has a list of about 4.5 million SSNs -- AF is working to verify accuracy and pull AF SSNs from that list -- Appears we have approximately 500,000 Airmen affected: Active, Guard, and Reserve CURRENT: - DFAS is preparing an email alert similar to the pay-notification emails you may have seen lately -- Will go to each affected Airman; a return box will be set up to handle rejected emails for action - AFPC is loading the list of SSNs into a web-based inquiry system -- All Airmen will be able to access the web application and type in their SSN to get one of two responses like... --- "Not matched, recommend you take normal ID Theft precautions for day-to-day contingencies" --- "Matched, you may contact the VA at 1-800-FED INFO (1-800-333-4636)" or go to their website at www.va.gov <http://www.va.gov> for further information - Working to get these functional ASAP NEXT: - After data is loaded, ensure AFPC Contact Center is prepared to handle any calls - AFPC will send a PA release advising of the web application - Continue to spread the word about ID Theft protection in general...be a prepared Airman We will continue to provide you updates as we receive them.
