Police: Dad pulls gun on coach to get son in ball game

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (Reuters) -- The father of a young football player pulled a gun on his son's coach because he didn't think the boy was getting enough playing time, Philadelphia police said on Monday.

Wayne Derkotch, 40, was charged with aggravated assault after getting in a fight with the coach over the amount of time the boy was getting on the field at a game for 6- and 7-year-olds on Sunday morning, said police spokesman Officer Raul Malveiro.

"There was a physical altercation about what child should play or not play and then he pulled the gun," Malveiro said.

There were no injuries and Derkotch fled before being arrested after a complaint was made by the coach, whose name was not released, Malveiro said.

Parental behavior at children's sports events has come under scrutiny from groups such as the Citizenship Through Sports Alliance. The group's study gave parents a D grade for their conduct and involvement at kids' games.

An Internet straw poll of nearly 3,000 by the Center for Sports Parenting found that 85 percent of the participants had witnessed parents or coaches becoming verbally abusive during games. Forty percent had seen physical abuse.

okay, but did the coach put the kid in the game?????

i played baseball for 12 years and football for 6. my dad was my coach for 3 years in baseball. he never showed any emotion or anything. kinda weird.

i'll watch a game with him on tv, never shakes his head or nothing.

i took him to the Michigan NASCAR race on fathers day. he enjoyed himself, but never got excited or anything.

ive heard other parents during my years saying stuff, but thats as far as it went. i know i will be different when my kids play, its hard for me to keep quiet.

This has been all over the news, but it doesnt surprise me. Parents get totally stupid over these little league games.

They should probably just be banned to prevent more of this stupidity, but, on the other hand, the leagues are good for the kids.

Just goes to show how stupid people are. At any rate, the Coach and some of the other parents beat this dudes asss real good.

LOL.

Too many parents have stars in their eyes about their kids being the next major league/NFL superstar, and go way overboard by forgetting that when you are 7 yrs old, the game is still a GAME, supposed to be FUN!! And too many coaches have stars in their eyes for bragging rights---"Yep, see that guy on the TV, I was his little league coach!!" Too many adults trying to live out what they couldn't accomplish through their kids! I used to live next to an elementary school's ball fields, and have heard way too much major league coach-yelling for little league. IT'S JUST A GAME!! (Untill you are actually making the 7-figure salaries) <img src=newicons/Whatever_anim.gif border=0 align=middle>

Last night some evil-doing Goblin robbed some poor fucking cub scout selling cookies or whatever.

Wish i was there to see it. I would've shot that disgraceful thief right in his god-damned face.
