Post subject:  I didn't realize I was old

Well I really didn't think I was old until Friday.

I got to work and my retirement orders were in my e-mail inbox. I was estatic. Actual time served will be 26yrs 0month and 14 days. So I printed up a copy and took it to roll call with me.

We normally have a very loose rollcall on Fridays so I was standing up in front to the flight like I normally do and held up my orders and started talking shit about retiring. So one of the guys asks me how long I will have served? So I told them 26yrs, and didn't think anything about it.

Later after rollcall one of the SSgt's in the flight comes up and tells me \"MSgt Hodges, you do know that 90% of the flight wasn't even born when you joined the AF?\"

Crap, talk about being made to feel like an old man?

:D

The great Thing about Military Retirement. Is that it was only half the adventure of your life. Enjoy the new adventures of the later half.

I recall being a 17 Year Old Marine PFC on the USS Guam in August of 1982. Boy did I take a wrong move as a Reservist volunteering to go on Float with the 32ndth MAU, by December 24th MAU had our Howitzers ashore and were shelling the Hills of Lebanon We relieved the 24thMAU and were doing Live combat patrols with the lebanese army through the spring. I recieved LCPL 1 month before my 18th Birthday and Meritourous Cpl 3 weeks latter on a Hospital ship Recovering for wounds. Getting promoted and recieving a purple heart in the same week as my birthday. March sucked in 1983

It was easy to be motivated in college after that

I like to remember when I sat in the line shack on the boat and called al the First Class's and Chief Pett Officers \"lifers\". Now I am the same way, a couple years over twenty and telling cold war sea stories. It is funny though when me and some of the guys sit around and talk about the cartoons we used to watch. Most of the guys have never even heard of them.

That's why I retired at 27 years. I kept running into young airmen who had less time on the planet than I had time in service.

I'd be telling guys about loading on the A-10's back in the late '70s, and get this:

 \"Jeeeze Sar-gent, I wazzun't even born then!\"

Yup, it's time to go.

Congratulations Fender. You're about to become an ORF!

I'm a lifer, and at the ripe old age of 25 I'm only younger than two Crew Chiefs in the flight, both who are only one year older than me. I like to make fun of the really old guys still, like Lil Hitler. Did you all know he was in the Air Force back when Christ was a Corporal?

Damn , if I would of stayed in last Thursday would of been 26 years when I raised my hand ,and then 4 months later report for basic a week after my 18th birthday.
But your right when the News Casters are younger than you, time to worry.

Well if we're counting like Goose does! LOL
I'll be 45 in June and July 10th would have been 27 yrs!

I got out at 7 yrs 10 months some odd days with a line for Tech. Of course I didnt find out about making Tech until doing the CBPO records check a couple days before seperation! OF course its too late then to say \"Hold on a minute!\"

Just to provide a time hack....I was born in May 1983...will be 24 this year.

The bad thing...I have worked with enough \"old timers\" to know terms like 35-10 and CBPO. Commissary, BX, and Post Office, right?
