At least two of the planes were MiG-29s. The two other fighters were thought to be MiG-23s. U.S. military sources said Monday that the Air Force plane was in international airspace about 150 miles [240 kilometers] off the Korean peninsula when the MiGs approached and flew alongside for 20 minutes, at some points coming within less than 400 feet of the U.S. plane. The RC-135 is a modified version of the military C-135 cargo plane, which is based on the Boeing 707 commercial airliner. The Air Force plane returned to its base in Okinawa, Japan, without incident. U.S. officials say it was the first incident of a U.S. plane being intercepted by North Korean aircraft in more than 30 years. The previous incident occurred in 1969, when a North Korean fighter shot down a U.S. EC-121 reconnaissance aircraft over the Sea of Japan, killing more than 30 U.S. airmen, according to a Pentagon official. Tension has been rising on the Korean Peninsula since North Korea disclosed in October that it had renewed efforts to develop nuclear weapons it swore off in a 1994 agreement. Last week, North Korea fired a short-range missile at sea during naval exercises, and on Friday, Japanese newspapers reported that Pyongyang had tested a rocket booster for its Taepo Dong ballistic missile at a launch site on the country's east coast in January. Yes, and actually fighters from South Korea could of gotten there. allot sooner. But in all reallity this type of activity is all to common around China and the Disputed northern Islands of Japan. 3 countries are climbing that island as their soveriegn property. North Korea's clear intent was to rattle their sabers so they feel nice and warm inside. I Bet the aircrews got some good Photos to show their friends back home. I think their Idiotic attitude as of late will get the other Commies to outcast them a little more. North Korea is the Communist stepchild. Her day of being a pawn is coming upon her soon enough. |

They could have sent F-16Cs from Kunsan or from Kadena... the RC-135 shouldn't have been provoked though... the Migs actually locked it up on TAS, that could almost be construed as an act of war, perhaps they are stepping up their program. Yes F16s are at Kunsan but not at Kadena (at least not permanantly stationed there). The US F16s in Japan are stationed up at Misawa. I like how the article states how at least 2 of the planes were mig29s and the other 2 were 'thought to be' mig23s. Nice news leak. The RC crew knows EXACTLY what planes intercepted them. No question. The news just got some silly tidbit of info from some ass. |

F15Cs are still at Kadena (the site of the infamous F15 community"incident"). I was just contradicting what someone said about F16s being there. |

I UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU MEANT. MAN THAT WOULD BE A LONG HAUL FOR A LAWNDART IF STATIONED AT KADENA QUEEN BEE FOR -39'S WAS KADENA AND RIGHT NEXT TOO THE RF-4'S THEN THE "TOW DART" F-86'S FROM ROCKWELL SO YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE A QUIET HANGAR BUT GOT TO LOOK AT MY FIRST F-5E THEIR. North Korea is like a 3 year old child trying to make a crisis out of not getting a snickers bar...........You can bet their military media mouth peice leaked the story, this kind of stuff happends alot. I suppose the significance is that they actually splurged on jet fuel and pilot time to make a "statement" North Korea is broke and starving, they no longer have the support of the Soviet Sphere of influence, and are expending their final trump card in an attempt to survive...........Economic attrition is the way to play them, and if they do go nuclear, we have a blank check to do with them as we see fit............ To clear up any confusion (I was typing too fast yet again)-- The F-16Cs are from Misawa and Kunsan/Osan... F-15Cs are still at Kadena. And yes Goose, it would be a long haul for the LDACs (Lawn Dart Air-Craft) <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> "TACAIR, the Air Force Version of Fast Food." In 1965 a RB-47 got in a furball with the NKs and might had shot down a Mig or two. NKs get a little testy. I hope they have a CAP next time. It was a Navy EC-121 shot down with the loss of 31 crew.
