The New Yorker magazine reports in its July 26th edition that members of all four branches of the U.S. military can get face-lifts, breast enlargements, liposuction and nose jobs for free -- something the military says helps surgeons practice their skills. "Anyone wearing a uniform is eligible," Dr. Bob Lyons, chief of plastic surgery at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio told the magazine, which said soldiers needed the approval of their commanding officers to get the time off. Between 2000 and 2003, military doctors performed 496 breast enlargements and 1,361 liposuction surgeries on soldiers and their dependents, the magazine said. I can just imagine the confusion on a sailor's face as he discovers the rip-ties for the bigger, better, pneumatically actuated "personal flotation devices" on his co-service date. Well, morale HAS been lagging in the military... <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> I can see offering things like nose jobs, scar removal, and to an extent facelifts, but I don't really see a good enough connection between boob jobs and lipo, and proficiency at reconstructive surgery. This sounds like FW&A, and an open invitation for someone to make a bad decision. Asking for time off work to go get a boob job just doesn't seem terribly proffessional. I can't see how it would possibly help your career. |

GO TO A VA HOSPITAL AND LOOK AT THE FOLKS AWAITNG TO SEE A SURGEON OR BETTER YET A GENERAL PRACTICE DR. IF THEY WANT TO PRACTICE,START ON THOSE VETS WHO ARE COVERED WITH SCARS AND BURNS OR MISSING PARTS ETC.....OR ANY DEPENDENT WHO NEEDS SURGERY FOR BIRTH DEFFECTS OR ACCIDENTS AFTER THEY FIX EVERYONE UP THEN THEY CAN PRACTICE FOR PRIVATE PRACTICE IN THE CIVILIAN LIFE! Goose- you hit the nail on the head. That is exactly what they should be doing, not offering boob jobs. There is no reason for any woman, especially a woman in the military, to need a boob job. And especially not when there are plenty of veterans who would be much more justified in receiving surgery. BigVette, I think I missed your comment the first time around. I'm curious about your connection between this and getting women out of the military altogether. How so? |
