http://www.tennessean.com/education/arc ... D=54794437 Police escort Fisk's chief from plane Hazel O'Leary By IAN DEMSKY and MICHAEL CASS Staff Writers O'Leary disputes report she was loud and abusive Nine days after being named president of Fisk University, Hazel O'Leary found herself being questioned by the FBI last night after being escorted off a commercial airplane. O'Leary wanted to get off the plane as it waited on the tarmac for more than an hour after being diverted to Richmond, Va., yesterday evening because of storms, said Cpl. Frank Donkle of the Richmond International Airport Police. The crew of the Nashville-to-Washington flight told airport police that O'Leary, 67, was ''getting loud and abusive'' and had to be physically restrained at one point, Donkle said. O'Leary, a former U.S. energy secretary under President Bill Clinton, disputed police accounts, saying in a short statement issued late last night: ''I regret the unfortunate misunderstanding that occurred (yesterday) evening. The situation was resolved. At no time was I rude or disrespectful to anyone. I answered all the questions that were asked and resumed my journey.'' The statement did not address why O'Leary was taken off the plane. It was also unclear where she was headed and by what mode she was traveling after the incident. The plane landed in Richmond at 6:15 p.m. Eastern time and waited in an area mainly used by cargo planes near the passenger terminal for an hour and 15 minutes, said airport spokesman Troy Bell last night. While waiting to take off again, the aircraft's female captain went to the restroom, she told airport police. On the way back, Donkle said, the captain heard a male flight attendant tell a passenger something like, ''You can't go back there.'' The flight attendant had to physically restrain O'Leary, who was attempting to get to the cockpit, Donkle said. The pilot, meanwhile, retreated inside the cockpit and locked the door, he said. The flight crew contacted airport police and asked them to escort a passenger off the plane, Bell said. Bell would not confirm the airport police account of the incident or even that O'Leary was the passenger. When airport police arrived, they found O'Leary sitting calmly in a seat, Donkle said. They escorted her off the plane, and she was then turned over to local FBI agents for questioning. Fisk spokesman Ronald Roberts, who spoke to O'Leary by phone and then to The Tennessean, was unable to address the differences between O'Leary's account and the account given by airport police. O'Leary did not return a message left by a reporter on her cell phone. Fisk trustees hired O'Leary to stabilize a school known in recent years for shaky finances and a revolving door for presidents. She is the university's fourth president — not counting interim leaders — since 1996, and trustees have been counting on her to raise many millions of dollars and build Fisk's endowment. O'Leary, a 1959 Fisk graduate, introduced herself as its new president on July 13, telling reporters, ''It is no secret to anyone who knows me that I'm a highly energized, fast-thinking, fast-moving kind of person.'' Reynaldo P. Glover, chairman of the Fisk board, said in announcing O'Leary's appointment that day that he would ''never again entertain questions of whether Fisk will survive. It is a given.'' But some other Fisk watchers questioned the hiring of a woman who was past traditional retirement age and had been in hot water politically during her Cabinet term for frequent and costly overseas flights. Glover could not be reached for comment last night. United Airlines Flight 5886, which left Nashville at 3:20 p.m. Central time, left Richmond for its original destination, Washington Dulles International Airport, at 8:47 p.m. Eastern time, according to United's Web site. The reason for the late arrival at Dulles given on the site was ''Schedule change due to Customer Service.'' Messages left with the FBI in Richmond were not returned last night. Bell, the airport spokesman, said he was not aware of any charges that had been filed or were pending in connection with the incident. |
