This article makes me sick for a reason that isn't written. It took her side right off the bat. Did you notice the small blurb where she refused to give the officer her ID. She broke a brand new law right there. The cop was doing his job, she said "Don't you have some other crimes you have to take care of?" If a cop asks for an ID you have to give it to him nowadays. I have the distinct feeling we are missing a lot of dialogue in this story. If they gave out that quote it makes you wonder what was excluded. She was breaking a law by eating on the subway, the cop verbally warned the commie pinko EPA weenie not to, she became a wiseass, he fixed her little solar powered red wagon. Smitty |

The cop got a tude, obviously. She's right, he should have been stopping serious crime, and not breaking the balls of someone who technically was not breaking the law anymore(the candy bar was finished). If we replace the chick in this article with me, the exchange goes like this "No eating in here" "OK, it's finished, sorry". "Hey pal, lemme see your ID" (under breath as i walk over)"Go Fuck yourself pal" "What did you say? Get over here!" "Sorry....what did you want to see? My PAPERS?" (Nazi accent) "you have a smart mouth". "My appologies, please don't take me to Gestapo HQ". Some things are worth getting arrested over. Good job on his part. You never know, a militant group could get 427 members to carry candy bar sized parts of a bomb onto a subway car and assemble it one of the cars. And good sculptures in D.C.? I want a life size size bin Laden sculpted from chocolate, take it on the subway. And offer the passengers a chance to break off and eat bits & pieces of Chocosama. <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> "If you liked the first eight years of Clinton. Forgive me if I said, which it appears I did, that she should have been arrested. All I meant to get at is that we are missing some of the story and I feel that there is in our day and age too much blatant disrespect for law enforcement. She did not get arrested for eating a candy bar. She was arrested because there is a new law on the books requiring you to show an ID to a law enforcement officer when it is requested. This, like it or not, was upheld by the supreme court. Now lets change this story just a little in another direction. Arabic middle aged woman eating a candy bar with a chip on her shoulder getting on the subway. She finished the bar as requested, then the officer and her continued on the same path into the station when she turned and said, "Don't you have some other crimes you have to take care of?" As an officer you wonder. Why is this woman so defensive? Does she have something to hide? Is there something in her handbag? I wonder what the last thing a subway cop in japan saw just before a gas attack? Perhaps I should check her ID and play it safe. Who knows. She may have a warrant and that's why she is so snippy. Maybe I'll recognize her name from our morning briefing. Why did she refuse to give me her ID? SHE IS WALKING AWAY FROM ME. OH SHIT. IS SHE ONE OF THE PEOPLE WE ARE LOOKING FOR? Did you look at her a little different? Maybe that's why the article was written the way it was. This article is written the same way on CNN. It takes her side very subtly. Anyone who knows me knows how I feel about the media and it's methods and biases. Do I think a cop has the right to invade our privacy? NO! Do I think that a cop has the right to ask for my ID if there is a problem? You are damn right I do. What if airport security asked Mohammed Atta for his passport and saw something that did'nt make sense? What if some cop in the midwest did'nt get an ID from some drunk walking down the street yelling at a cloud? He could be the guy wanted for raping and killing a mother and daughter. Extreme situations I realize, but not unrealistic. It's only a drivers license, passport, or even a college id. All I am getting at is that we are only given part of the story. Yes there have been incedents in the past for these law enforcement officers that are less than flattering, however, it is not necessarily this cop. Why do you think that was included in the article? It very seductively sheds a negative light on that cop. Which would you rather have looking out for the best interests of our country, a passive, uninquisitive cop, or an aggressive, inquisitive cop who isn't going to be intimidated. Like it or not the ID thing is the law. She refused to give an ID. Maybe the cop had and attitude, maybe she overreacted and he decided it was weird enough to investigate further. If I'm on the subway I'll take the latter. The next person who gives the cop trouble may have a castor bean farm in his back yard and a lab in his or her cellar. The story has too many holes to just jump to conclusions against the cop, which is the way it is written. How do you think, hypothetically, the reporter who wrote this feels about the patriot act? Break down the story like you would if your kid came home and tolk you a story about he got in a fight with a kid in the park. "He just started hitting me!" Literal translation....."I called him an asshole, then he beat the shit out of me." Why do you think that the new law about producing an ID was ommitted from this story when it is so pertinant? Then again, maybe the cop was an asshole. The story just doesn't tell us the complete story. Smitty |

A well thought out retort- but still not working for me. He was pissed she didn't listen to him, so he showed her 'whos boss'. I've seen cops do it many times. Personally, cops really piss me off. "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction" Ronald Reagan |
