Pregnant Student, Banned From Graduation, Walks

MONTGOMERY, Ala. — A pregnant student who was banned from graduation at her Roman Catholic high school announced her own name and walked across the stage anyway at the close of the program.

Alysha Cosby's (search) decision prompted cheers and applause Tuesday from many of her fellow seniors at St. Jude Educational Institute (search).

But her mother and aunt were escorted out of the church by police after Cosby headed back to her seat.

"I can't believe something like this is happening in 2005," said her mother, Sheila Cosby. "My daughter has been through a lot and I am proud of her. She deserved to walk, and she did."

The school's guidance counselor delivered Cosby's degree to her house earlier Tuesday, but she still wanted to participate.

"I worked hard throughout high school and I wanted to walk with my class," she said.

Cosby was told in March that she could no longer attend school because of safety concerns, and her name was not listed in the graduation program.

The father of Cosby's child, also a senior at the school, was allowed to participate in graduation.

One of the best workers I've got in my office had two kids by the time she was seventeen, and was a high school drop out. At that point she woke up the fact that if she didn't do something with her life nobody was going to do it for her. She busted her butt and got her GED by the time she would have graduated. She's taken a few college courses since then.

She's an absolute delight to have working here, and by all accounts the children (now 9 and 12) are well behaved and taking honors classes.

I hope the young woman in this story has what it takes as well, I think she's off to the right start.

And how come she gets booted, but the sperm donor gets a pass?

The sperm donor may not even go to that school, may be out of school, or could be a dropout himself.

Being banished from participation in a high school graduation ceremony is the least of this girl's problems. Why does it even matter? She's going to be a mother soon and better grow up fast. First on the agenda, don't waste effort on a useless protest like this. Take your medicine and learn something from your mistakes. Her mother is not helping her with antics like this. She should have done something a little earlier when it could make a difference.
