Anyone have anything newsworthy on either system? Namely backwards capabilites (X-box games and PS2, maybe even PS1 games can be played on the respective systems) and release dates?

A nice string of bad luck kept a PS2 out of my hands for close to three years, and I'm looking to cut my losses and catch up with the rest of the free world by geting a PS3.

E3 2005: PlayStation's Back, Alright!
Backwards-compatibility re-confirmed.
by Nix
May 16, 2005 - The big excitement of this year's Sony Conference at E3 was about the new PlayStation 3, but don't let news of a new system deter you from getting psyched for the PS2 games that will be shown on the show floor (and PS1, if there happens to be an amazing PS1 game to report on this year ... Hey, it could happen.) Sony reconfirmed as part of its E3 unveiling of PS3 that the system will be backwards-compatible with PS2 and PS1 games.

There was no word in this news on whether texture smoothing might be used to improve PS2/PS1 games -- the PlayStation 2 had rudimentary filters to help run PlayStation 1 games with a cleaner look and with less loadtimes, so it is hoped that we'll see some advancements with this new monster machine on the games everybody already owns.
Look for a test of PS3's backwards compatibility a long, long time from now. In the meantime, we'll be covering all of the PS2 games (and PS1 games) that you should be buying in preparation for this new Sony console. Oh, and obviously, to play and enjoy the hell out of in the meantime...

Sounds pretty fucking sweet...too bad the 465.00 doesn't. Eh, I'll continue trying for a PS2 after all.

Tock,

I got myself a PSP from duty free in UAE last week.

Real, real sweet and almost as good as a PS2 with with the only difference is 1.6GB storage on the mini DVDs it uses rather than 4gb on the full size ones.

The screen is amazing, the best I've seen on any handheld device and the games are of PS2 quality.

It also play MP3's, Video (needs converting to MP4 format)and acts as a picture viewer.

The best gadget I've ever bought, all of a sudden long haul flights aren't quite so boring...

That's a probably, but I may most likely opt for the PS2 since it's also a standard sized DVD player and there's a small stack of DVD's within arms reach.

And what's better is that PS2 might drop in price a bit more now that the PS3 is coming.

You're both making a lot of sense with the PS2 argument...

But, get your hands on a PSP for a few minutes and you will do anything including selling your soul to have one for keeps...
