As most people know, where I fly out of at Holloman AFB, New Mexico, the German Air Force also trains their Tornado jet pilots. One of the German AF pilots here also owns a German-registered glider, which he bases from the local Alamogordo airport, located 5 miles from Holloman AFB. He is a member of the White Sands Soaring Club, however has been barred from flying his foreign-registered glider by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) due to the "proximity to an active military base," with the implication of homeland security considerations (other gliders routinely fly out of the civil airport). He has sent a letter to the FAA stating, in part:

"As my normal duty, I make a takeoff three times a week from a US military installation, Holloman AFB in specific. I am flying a "foreign" (to you) supersonic jet fighter, loaded to it's maximum capacity with explosives and bullets. I fly this jet over most of the southwestern states as a normal part of my job.

If I had any desire to hurt you or your country, I would not use my glider. Thank you for your consideration."

Reply awaits.

We shall see, what the answer is. So they think his glider is more danger to the US than his full loaded Tornado.

Another question: "how long do the Germans stay at Holloman afb? I thought (maybe it was a rumour) that they leave the base".

Question did anyone check the tornados for recon pods during their training? Isn't that a common mission for the tornado.

They got rid of the German F-4s. Reason is them moving over to the Eurofighter, last I heard. Don't know if they want to bring them over.

I own a Couple Competition Gliders, a Scliecher ASW19 and A ASW-28. Both manufactured in Germany. But that is also not the issue at Hand. I am not allowed to penetrate the SLC International airspace or Hill. But At Edwards all i need is a 45 Minute notification to the Tower. Alot of this is Political. There is plenty of open Timeblocks you can schedule into an airfield. The problem is that Somebody doesnt want you there. So they use chickenshit Blanket regs to prevent any recreation.

SAILPLANES in the US are considered Experimental. No FAA License is required to own or Fly. Sailplanes are governed politically VIA SAilplane Clubs and a Couple non-profit organisations. It all comes down to Civil Liability. Since the FAA Governs Aviation Import/Export. They use those laws to rape your entertainment.

I recommend that he get granted special Access from Holloman. If Holloman doesnt have a glider club, he should start one.

Are sailplanes and gliders considered the same thing, FAA wise? Since I do believe there are FAA glider licenses.
