Could someone please translate what's on the patch on the right for me? I got it when I visited the USS Intrepid SEAS and I'd like to know what it means. <img src="http://www.ljmilitaria.com/17328d5e0.jpg" border=0> "Retreat, hell! We just got here!"-Captain Lloyd Williams, 2nd Marine Division, Belleau Wood, France, WWI |

Ben I believe the word coelo is the latin translation for the word Earth. It is tranliterated from the a language you have probably heard of called Koine Greek. Koine Greek is comparable to Elizabethan English in that it is now a dead language. The Koine language is the reason that that the King James version of the Bible is considered the Authorized text for all reformed or Protestant churches. It was the purest and highest form of the Greek language. Likewise when it was translated into English, it was done into Elizabethan English which was English at its literary highpoint and very pure. That is why scholars believe the the King James is the purest translation of the texts into English. Anyway it appears that the word coelo appears in the fourth line of the Lords Prayer and is the word that translates for Earth. By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson |
