From the way the guy describes it, it's murder. I have nothing against it, but it seems that if they all piled up on him, they should have been able to apprehend him. I wasn't there though, so I can't really judge if he was a threat (trying to blow up his bomb) or not. "Retreat, hell! BR: You're full of crap on this one. He's been chased for at least 200 mtrs by up to 20 cops all of them shouting for him to stop and he didn't. In the current situation London finds itself, that makes you guilty... He got what he deserves. But I will admit, this is a first for the standard UK armed police. To pile on top of a guy and to blow him away with extreme and up-close violence is fairly unique... But they do have new rules of engagement, if there is any chance the suspect might be a suicide bomber, it's three shots to the head. I was actually wondering if anybody in any of the countries WT covers knows of a similar incident involving their police (not elite AT units). More details are coming out and then immediately getting hushed up. Apparently the guy got five rounds to the head whilst on the floor. Now don't get me wrong, I fully support what was done, but I've never heard of anything like this before at home or abroad. I've read about plenty of gun fights where police have unloaded into a perp, but never whilst the BG was held down on the ground and hit 5 times in the head. If the above is true (and the fact that it's not been repeated on the mass media probably means it is) it's got to elevate UK Special Branch pretty high up the "The World's Hard-ass cops" league table. http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4711021.stm Seems the guy shot was a Brazilian not connected with the bombings. Tough call here. Obviously a mistake. I mean, police don't normally shoot someone running away, but provision is made (in the US at least) that if it is reasonably believed that the person running away will be committing harm or injury to others, they can shoot. Why this man ran may never be known, but with the events of that day that were happening at that time, and this man begins running while the police ask him to halt, then IMO they reasonably believed the threat to be there, even though it wasn't. Tragic indeed. |
