Children's Hospital under seige Tuesday, 11:45 p.m. Late Tuesday, Gov. Blanco spokeswoman Denise Bottcher described a disturbing scene unfolding in uptown New Orleans, where looters were trying to break into Children's Hospital. Bottcher said the director of the hospital fears for the safety of the staff and the 100 kids inside the hospital. The director said the hospital is locked, but that the looters were trying to break in and had gathered outside the facility. The director has sought help from the police, but, due to rising flood waters, police have not been able to respond. Bottcher said Blanco has been told of the situation and has informed the National Guard. Excerpt: One man said police directed him to Wal-Mart from Robert's Grocery, where a similar scene was taking place. A crowd in the electronics section said one officer broke the glass DVD case so people wouldn't cut themselves. "The police got all the best stuff. They're crookeder than us," one man said. Thank God Orleans Parish is now under martial law. Shot police officer in surgery The New Orleans police officer shot in the head by a looter Tuesday was expected to survive, officials said. The officer, who has not been identified, was in surgery at West Jefferson Medical Center after being shot in the forehead, police said. The officer was shot by a looter after he and another officer confronted a number of looters at a Chevron store at Shirley and Gen. DeGaulle. Jefferson Parish sheriff's deputies on the scene arrested four people in connection with the shooting. Boomer its Louisana, its requirement that you have a pick-up,a gun rack with a shotgun and rifle in it,a Dog and a busted headlight. So they all are armed unless their from "Out of State",its the worthless "SHIT" Looters that get their hands on a Gun and think it gives them the right to take what they want. Reports of CH-47s taking small arms fire while evacing people. This situation is beyond the control of civil police. NO is, for all intents and purposes, a war zone, and is going to need some serious muscle to bring order back in. Military muscle. In some places, it seems no different than a smaller-scale Somalia or Fallujah We may very well see American soldiers needing to shoot and possibly kill other Americans, in order to restore the law. This is not unprecedented, as was posted about a month ago here on this forum: The last time this was needed was in LA in 1992, when Marine units backed-up LAPD units in raids on homes in the Watts area. Everyone's aware that FEMA was absorbed into Homeland Security, right? FEMA's budget was gutted last year to put the $$ towards Homeland Security so now, the very people trained to handle this type of disaster are no longer around. Of course, I'm not sure anyone can handle something of this magnitude, it has no precedent anywhere in this country...there's no script, no plan and from what I'm seeing, it's being played out hour by hour. For the life of me, I don't understand the sniping of rescue aircraft and boats. What are these people thinking? OC |
