From the BBC website - New Orleans rocked by huge blasts The New Orleans riverfront has been hit by a series of massive blasts, and fires are raging in the area. The cause and extent of damage are not yet clear. Police boats are at the scene of the explosions, which occurred at about 0430 (0930GMT). We're starting to hear of large explosions, possibly at the waterfront chemical plants. If it is the chemical plants, there's going to be chemical contamination to add to the list of problems. You're born, you keep your head down and you die. If you're lucky... |

They wont because the cant. Sometimes mans best efforts just cant. And you feel like shit because we would all give if we had anything to give, and we would all help if we had a way to do so. The worst part is, is that New Orleans can never be rebuilt. It is a loss that cannot be recovered, ever. Total destruction. By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson |

Been watching and reading coverage of this like everybody else... tragic doesn't even begin to describe it. I got a call from a Ford dealer in Louisiana earlier who began by introducing himself and his location with "one of the only dry areas around here." He proceeded to tell me about a buddy of his that's a SCUBA diver who went in to help with the rescue effort. Apparently one of the guys he was with went in with a rescue boat, and started getting people off rooftops and such. Within about 10 minutes, he turned around to find that the rescued people had taken off - with the rescue boat. Between the looting, the ignorant disdain for 'help' and the general chaos that's erupting from this devastation, I'm beginning to wonder if some of these people don't want the help. This is nuts. I keep wondering where our government is during all this..but Dubya is going to tour the area..for what, I've no idea. This is fucked up. OC |

I dont know that there is a good idea of WHERE to drop! Superdome would probly be a good start, but I dont know. A 9mm MAY expand, but a 45 will NEVER shrink! |

I agree with the fuck-up part Chief! It seems to me people (and the goverment) have been caught flat-footed on this one, I know I was. Watching the news on Monday it seems things weren't that bad but, after the dams broke it's just got worse every day...it's time to mobilize and get the aircraft in the air, hell I'll help load a 130 or C-5! Anywhere is a good place to drop. MRE's and water bottles float. I guarantee none of it is going to remain unclaimed for long once the natives catch wind that drops are going on. I also want to know why no pamphlet drops were initiated. Containing simple messages like, "We're coming to get you" or "Walk East out of the city", or "blah blah blah". The response has totally underwhelmed me. THANK GOD THIS WAS NO TERRORIST NUKE ATTACK WITH NO PRIOR WARNING!!! There are two kinds of soldiers. I usually like to back up my statements with a who and where type details but I didnt get the whole radio broadcast to find out who it was. Anyhoo, on the BBC this morning I heard an interview with a guy from FEMA.Part of the reason this happened was because the emergency evacuation plans that the city had in place ASSUMED that all people to be evacuated had access to personal transportation. Unfortunately they were wrong. By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson |

In the foreground a woman was shouting something like "It's no good over there, we're here (100 mtrs away), why are you dropping it there..." I'm guessing the reason why the crew did the lightest/quickest touch possible is they didn't want to be the first guys to get heli-jacked. But I was amazed these folks had a beef with having to walk 100 paces to get the water. They lost a bit of my sympathy right then... You're born, you keep your head down and you die. And of course we have the a**holes that are quick to take advantage of the situation. I'm thinking most people here won't fall for any of these but it's just the begining. With all of the devastation, we are already seeing many kinds of scams specific to Hurricane Katrina: 1. Chain letters: According to Anne Mitchell, aka Aunty Spam, the first email hoax was a request to forward the hoax because fifty cents would supposedly be donated to help victims for every copy of the email forwarded. 2. Phishing scams: According to the Washington Post, a number of fraudulent websites have already been set up pretending to be legitimate hurricane Katrina relief organizations. These sites request charitable donations but in fact steal financial information and my be used for identity theft as well. Contributions, of course, go into the pockets of the scammers rather than to help people who desperately need it. 3. Misleading emails trying to take advantage of the disaster to sell unrelated products: Here's an example of an email that was just trying to sell Viagra: --- Begin scam email --- Subject: Re: 80 percent of our city underwater. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour said Tuesday that Hurricane Katrina killed as many as 80 people in his state and burst levees in Louisiana flooded New Orleans. Just before daybreak Tuesday, Katrina, now a tropical storm, was 35 miles northeast of Tupelo, Miss., moving north-northeast with winds of 50 mph. Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center said the amount of rainfall had been adusted downward Monday. Read More.. [Link went to a Viagra website] --- End scam email --- |

Little Rock AFB right up the State a C-130 outfit could of dropped ,pallets and also with even the Strech of I-10 could of been doing Med-ivac flights out,you have the 82ND and 101st not including the 1st Armour along with FT Steward. This HOMELAND SECURITY THING CZAR whatever is a JOKE!,Folks blame the State, they blame Washington but in truth when the office of Homeland Security was formed everything went thru him.FEMA answers to him. But their should of been Active duty Combat patrols on the ground in NO and along the coast within hours, If PUNK ASS BITCH shows-up with his AK-47 KNOCK-OFF like he's "IN CHARGE" he gets wasted!, Sorry but thats life, onething is looters, another is terrifing the people who need help and just want to survive, The trouble makers make good news stories, their not showing the ones trying, but when hospitals have to lock down do to these "&^$%^$$%$%@#" shooting for fun stealing and raping they get on the spot "SHOT" I HOPE AND PRAY MATT EITHER GOT OUT WITH HIS FAMILY OR TO HIGH GROUND,and if they tried to take his stuff ,or take what little he had he "Used that Sniper training from Snipe" because it aint going to matter in the end. Goose, somewhere in the back of my alleged mind lurks a thought that there's a prohibition on using active duty troops on U.S. soil. I think it goes back to the aftermath of the civil war but I could be way off base. OC |

It's called Posse Comitatus, and it can be called for temporary rescinscion during time of emergency by POTUS as it was during the LA riots. The Gov of the state in question has to REQUEST federal security forces, and president has to bring the measure before congress, then approve it himself. Then fed troops can be used for policing in the US. That's already been done. There are two kinds of soldiers. Just to let all know, yesterday myself and others took a 16ft flatbed trailer and pick up truck load of supplies headed to New Orlens. Today I will be going to purchase more needed supplies headed for the Ms. Gulf Coast. Moody AFB is flying pretty much 24/7 doing rescue missions, and taking supplies. FEMA is now accepting applications for Volunteer fire fighters to work in the storm damaged areas. As some of you know I am a fire chief and am seriously considering applying to take a FEMA position to work the areas. |

F1, Where can I find the FEMA application you speak of? I've been waiting to help out in some form, and this sounds like a possible way for me to do so. "The more you sweat in peacetime, the less you bleed in war." |
