First let me just say welcome to WT, this is the place to be if you looking for info on the A-10. We have several past, present and future Warthog flyers and maintainers here to answer your questions.

Ok now to the nitty gritty,

Tech School, not sure what the current length of the course is but when I went through some years ago it was six or 8 weeks and the initial training course is taught at Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls Texas.

From there you will go to Hot Training at (correct me if I'm wrong) Davis-Monthan AFB, Tucson AZ. I'm not sure how long the course is so I'll leave that for someone else to answer.

For your third question I'm not positive about how the ANG works but I know if your active duty you'll become a ACC as soon as you arrive to your first duty station. Heck in most cases they have personnel assigned to an aircraft prior to their arrival.

If you have and more questions just fire away.

Tech School is at Sheppard AFB (Witchita Falls, TX). It was about 4 months of actual class when I went through, but I've heard from the new guys at work it's changed since then. HOT is at DM (Tuscon, AZ) and that's about a month.

You say possibly as an A-10 Crew Chief. Is joing the ANG something you are considering, or you are definitely doing it, but don't know as what or with what unit?

Does the Guard/Reserve go through the same training program as the Active Duty?

Yeah the same, except in the Guard the new guy usually has a few months of coming to the base during drills or when he has time, before he leaves for boot camp. So sometimes he can get a few days farmiliarity with the airplane. All of which he or she forgets before getting to school. As far as Dcc vs Acc it depends. It is true that we dont have as many traditional guardsmen as Dcc's as we do full timers because we are full timers and it just makes more sense. But we are smaller on our manning document and so we have a couple orphaned jets during the week that anyone works on. These are the jets that have a traditional guardsmen listed as the Dcc. It is usually the most senior guardsmen also.

Man, what ever happened to the "30 days" of "ABLE CHIEF" at Sheppard AFB, and then to your unit for FTD and OJT?

I'm just showing Dice's age hey wait a minute I'm showing mine too

Welcome aboard, but your going to get a by the "Sniper" over leaving it to be a "Wrench turner"

Well I am definatley going to join Im just stuck between the Hog and the 16, The Hog from what i hear is an awsome A/C to work, and a Hog saved me and my teams' ass in Iskandyriah, did a gun run and then we lased the tgt and our other team lased and he fired a mav right down the alley below us and right thru the front door, It was the most F!@#$^& Bad A## thing i have ever seen in my life, which gave us enough time to get our casualty off the roof and out to the extract point. as for the 16 my buddy work in that unit and they allow traditionals to eventually move up to dcc, and they do incentive rides, the units i am looking at in Conniticut ANG and the Maryland ANG, and maybe Idaho. what is the deployment schedule like and how long to you guys deploy, hopefully not 18months

Oh no tell me he didn't say Pointy Nose . M14 I've worked on both aircraft and let me tell you the Hawg is by far a better aircraft (from a maintainer point of view).

As for deployment details I don't believe you'll get an answer here due to OPSEC. However if you still need those answers in making your decision you might try contacting those units to see if they can help you.

SGTGOOSE,

You can't be that old because I remember 30 days and the able chief course and regardless of what others on this board may say I'm NOT THAT DAMN OLD...

I have no opinion.....I still deal with both aircraft on a daily basis, and am adding the F/A-22 as we speak.

Hey M&M, out our curiosity, think you could take a picture of an A-10 for me and send it my way. I've always loved them (as you guys already know) but never had the chance to see one close.

Let me know!

Christ, you might as well just go all the way and join the Navy...

I am especially fond of A-7s for very similar reasons. Welcome aboard troop.

I like your style, I started out with a 24 but didn't like for patrolling, so got it swapped for my 14 we had 21's before we deployed but got traded in for 2 Barretts' but my 14 worked fine just wish I got to keep my Harris's. May SLUF's live on!!! I am really jazzed about joining, it's weird, kinda like first time with .50 at Quantico

I don't know about that Hitler. I distinctly remember a few times when you told m how you "have been in the Air Force since Christ was an Airman"

Put the URL to the picture you want on your posts and one of the admins(either me, dice, or the pale rider guy) will add the pic to your profile.

At any rate, good to have another shooter aboard, even if he's trading in his rifle for a wrench...

You know i was just reading this again and it occured to me that when i was in, the USAF didn't use SALH Mavs. Any lasing we did was for Copperhead or (very occasionaly) LGBs with the G/LVVD(GLID).

Anyone know when they started using them?

Dont know for sure but the E (SALH with the deadhead option if it broke lock )version came fairly early.
My book says '82.

I think the E model was a USMC only variant.

I havent loaded a Mav in over ten years but I do know we didnt load any models that needed lasing. Loaded A's, B's, D's and G's. I never loaded any E's. Hell I had never seen a G till I went to KFIA during DS1. Sure as hell loaded a lot of them there though. The A's and B's were EO and the D's and G's were IR.

Fender your right, I never even knew they had "G" MODELS until the War.
It wasnt too many years before then we started getting "D" model TGM's (IR) to practice with.
Have to Ask "Carl" about when we started getting the "G' models.

Its been along time hasnt it Bro? The mixed loads of AGM's 2 each EO and IR unless night squadrons then they got all IR's

The "C" was the "Laser Maverick", went into flight testing in January of '77 was replaced by the "E" for the Marines by 1982 so it didnt last long.
