What is your opinion of the Russian SA-10/20 S300/400 SAM systems?

I remember Type 7 and Thunderstruck speaking of them as very capable in past threads. Based on some recent discussions with Stuart Slade i was curious what the rest of the Hog Drivers on this site thought about the topic.

Feel free to answer in as much or as little detail as you like. :)

Without getting into too many details, yea, those are some bad boys. Huge range, very strong radar, good electronic protection. The good thing (for the average hawg pilot at least) is that they are such high value assets that you would probably expect these to (1) be destroyed on day 1 or 2 of a war or (2) be used against higher value assets. But that doesn't take away from their capabilities or respect that we have for them.

I agree with what you were saying on the other forum, I don't see how you can acquire any targets without first seeing them via line of sight, unless there were some outside source of information, but is that enough to fire on? Over the Horizon radars exist, but that is a whole different animal, with a minimum range several hundred miles out, and is definately not portable. So with that in mind, and no other sources of information to the battery, low level should get you within Harm or SRAM range, (that is if the SRAM still existed, which it doesn't). The SRAM is my favorite weapon of all time, in an air to ground aspect. I wish we didn't give it up. Thermonuclear, Mach 3 (plus? The Soviet Version, AS-16, claimed Mach 5.) nice standoff range.
