I was at NAS Brunswick doing an article on BRAC. Some of the info I got about from them makes little sense of closing down NASB.

NASB has already invested $160 BILLION with new hangers, control tower etc in the last 5 yrs.

NAS Jacksonville will have to invest $194 BILLION to upgrade NASJax to home these units. I find it difficult how they ok'd this process?

Was it either Portsmouth Navy Yard or Brunswick?

Dave one of the guys that used to post here a bit "fat attack tough" was a nuke engineer on ballstic missile subs at the yards in Portsmouth and it was indeed Portsmouth that is getting th axe.

It seems it would have made more sense to shut down the old ship yard instead of the upgraded NAS. The ship yard is already having a hard time looking for subs to work on.

The rotten thing about BRAC is the pure politics of it. Word was that BRAC was going to try to save money by not leasing property and utilizing DOD property. Well, I have been at Willow Grove as a crew chief full time for 16 years and it is DOD owned and they whacked us. Barnes gets F-15's and gets bigger???? are they not on leased land?? Good for them honestly but it is just plain dirty politics.

Barnes resigned the lease about seven years ago...it is good for fifty years...it cost a buck. The return seems pretty decent.

DISCLAIMER..........If your name is Smith and you crew a jet numbered 216 that is not assigned to Barnes and if your first name IS NOT Ernie, then I am sorry and this post is not directed at you.

I'm new to this site, and boy does it have some heat to it.

I'm glad that the A-10 mission is going to the 188th.

BRAC....what a hated group of letters that seem to piss everyone off, including me. Its no secret that Moody will once again be graced by the A-10, and I, like so many others here in this forum simply love the old girl. And I do agree with , and i havent the time to look back, whoever said BRAC sucks!!! If it wasnt for BRAC I would still have a secured job here at good ol' Moody. Because of this decision by so many with brass on their shoulders it forces me to either drop in the pay scale or move on following contracts. Hummmmm, up root the family again and move on or hang out here and see what happens. I hate BRAC because very soon I will be UNEMPLOYED!!!!!! That is my opinion of BRAC. Oh, yeah, guess one could say I am slightly bitter.

Bob,

I agree with you, the biggest problem is the uncertainty of our future. However, keep the faith my man, I'm hearing some interesting rumors from different sources which just may have things turning out better than what you or I expected. We just have to be willing to wait and see. Well that or move out to Texas and to me doing that would be a fate worse than death.... no offense to any one on the board from Texas.

I was headed that way this morning when we got toned for a wreck and then got toned for the second one with some one trapped. Didnt get to Nashville.

Nah, didn't get to see him off. He was gone by the time I got in from work and His Misses left later in the day. Sure won't be the same place without him being around.

Maybe things will change,The news reported the IL air guard is keeping its F-16's now instead of sending them to Fort Wayne.
So maybe there is "HOPE" after all.

From what I hear is that the IL unit and others like them could be flying until 2010. Some of those units (15 I'm told) that are losing iron could possibly lose positions within the civil engineering sqd to include the fire dept fulltime staffing.

With more planes, state’s units likely to be short-handed

From the "Arkansas Democrat Gazette":
Posted on Sunday, December 24, 2006

[...] The Pentagon recommended to the BRAC Commission that the
188th lose its aging F-16 fighter jets without receiving any new planes. It would have been a wing of Air Guardsmen without a mission.

The BRAC Commission decided the 188th would transition to the A-10 Warthog, a heartier, bunker-busting jet, and its F-16 s would go to the California National Guard. Half of the wing’s F-16 fleet has already been transferred.

The 188th will receive 17 of the 20 allocated A-10 jets by the end of the current federal fiscal year, Oct. 1.

“On April 14, we plan to fly our last local F-16 flight,” said Col. Kevin Wear, 188th commander. “If everything works as planned, that F-16 will escort the first four A-10 s [to the Fort Smith base. ]”

Those planes will be used to train the wing’s aircraft maintenance crews over the following three months.

“There will be no substantial flying at that time,” Wear said. “Those planes will be broken down and used as maintenance trainers.”

The wing has 13 pilots in A-10 training right now, with more heading for training after the first of the year.

The wing is third on the list of all A-10 wings for an avionics upgrade. The conversion of the wing’s 20 planes should be complete within the next two years, allowing it to move into the deployment rotation again.

“As far as overall conversion, there are so many massive changes going on the National Guard, massive conversions, that we got in the cycle early,” Wear said. “It may be the smoothest conversion Air Guard-wide.” [...]

Here is the latest I've seen concerning Willow Grove...........

Philadelphia Inquirer
January 5, 2007
Pg. 1
Willow Grove Air Wing To Be Disbanded In Oct.
The 913th Airlift Wing is shutting down. The fate of a Navy unit is still unclear.
By Tom Infield, Inquirer Staff Writer
The part-time airmen of the 913th Airlift Wing have ferried U.S.
military personnel and supplies across much of the world. In recent years, the Willow Grove unit has supported the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and aided humanitarian efforts in the Horn of Africa.
Now, the Air Force Reserve Command says it intends to shut down the unit, take away the remainder of its aging, propeller-driven C-130 aircraft, and close its facilities at the Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Montgomery County.
The end date, announced yesterday, is Oct. 1.
Col. Reinhard L. Schmidt, the wing commander, said deactivation probably became inevitable in 2005 when Congress approved a Defense Department plan to phase out the larger naval air facility at Willow Grove by 2011.
The Navy provides the runway the Air Force uses.
Schmidt said for months he had been telling the more than 200 full-time employees and 1,000 part-time reservists to \"prepare for the worst and hope for the best.\"
The 913th is the first major unit at Willow Grove to announce a shut-down date.
Kate Philips, Gov. Rendell's spokeswoman, said yesterday: \"This decision is in direct contradiction to our overall objective, which is to keep jobs at Willow Grove... . But, unfortunately, it's out of our hands.\"
A major dispute continues over the future of the 111th Fighter Wing, a Pennsylvania Air National Guard unit at the base.
Rendell is pressing a lawsuit arguing that the federal government has no authority to take away the unit's A-10 attack planes, as was announced in 2005.
The 913th was not targeted for closing when the Pentagon's Base Realignment and Closing Commission recommended shutting down the larger Willow Grove facility.
The commission approved recommendations transferring Navy and Marine Corps Reserve units at Willow Grove, and voted to strip the 111th of its planes, but not to disband it.
Master Sgt. John Skillman, 41, a full-time reservist with the 913th, said he wasn't surprised when the shoe dropped.
\"You could see it coming,\" he said. \"We were just waiting for the final word.\"
Skillman said that to continue as a reservist he likely would have to move from his home in Southampton, Bucks County.
\"If I have to, I will,\" he said. \"I don't want to.\"
The air wing plans to hold job fairs for employees today and tomorrow at the base.
The largely full-time civilian employees will meet with Philadelphia-area employers and representatives of other government agencies. A small number of reservists also work full time.
Part-time reservists, who train one weekend a month, will try to find spots with other units.
Marie Battle, 56, a retired master sergeant who works as a civilian employee, said she might just retire.
By late afternoon yesterday she already was talking of the 913th in the past tense while at her desk. \"It was a good place to work,\" said Battle, who lives in Philadelphia's Mount Airy section. \"I loved the people I was working with.\"
The Air Force owns 263 acres next to about 1,000 acres the Navy owns.
Brig. Gen. Richard Severson, an Air Force Reserve Command official, said the decision to close the air wing was based only partly on the eventual closing of Willow Grove. He said the Air Force was looking for ways to cut spending and targeted the 913th because it operates the oldest planes - dating from the 1960s - in the Air Force Reserve fleet.
In recent years, the Air Force has been slowly stripping the wing of its aircraft. A decade ago, the unit had 12. Today, it has two. In recent years the 913th has borrowed aircraft from other reserve units for its missions.
Severson flew to Willow Grove on Wednesday to deliver the official word that the wing would close. Yesterday the official closing date was announced.
Much of the work the 913th does will be transferred to Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina, he said. Many of the Willow Grove employees may be offered positions there.
Master Sgt. David Stroebel, 43, of Ocean Township, N.J., said most wing members had expected the news of the shutdown.
\"They're taking it in stride,\" he said.

I think the 111th just might be saved due to IL keeping their F-16's., so just hope that someone will

WAKE THE F-UP!!!
